5 Iconic ’90s High School Movies to Re-Watch This Summer

The ’90s were a fruitful decade in the high school movie business. We guess that the arrival of a new millennium does something to a person. Because of its current revival (which is hopefully almost over), it’s time to dig deeper into how the ’90s really looked like. What better way to do this than through some bitter sweet creations of the film industry. Perfect for a relaxed outdoor movie night after a hot day.

Never Been Kissed

A true ’90s icon, yes, we’re talking about Drew Barrymore, steps into the shoes of journalist Josie Geller who has to go undercover as a high school student. Instead of writing actual articles about her experience, she falls in love with her teacher. As a distraction from the main story line there’s a lot of drama amongst the students about popularity.

Nothing exciting or unpredictable, yet a fun romantic comedy if you just want to sit back and reset your mind.

Cruel Intentions

Cruel Intentions is a modern adaptation from Les Liaisons Dangereuses, a novel written by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos in the 18th century. As the title already reveals this film is basically about backstabbing. Rich kids in New York killing time with having sex and scheming on each other. Luckily, some see the light towards the end and there’s also some true romance involved.

Little side note: Cruel Intentions caused us to have a major crush on Ryan Phillippe. A crush that lasted quite a while, even though we knew he was in a serious relationship with his co-star Reese Witherspoon.

10 things I hate about you

The storyline is about Bianca, a popular girl in high school who can’t go to prom because her father doesn’t allow her. Only if her sister Kat, who’s totally not interested, agrees to join her she can leave the house. To convince Kat (Julia Stiles), Patrick (Heath Ledger) is involved in the story, he gets paid to persuade her. A classic boy-hates-girl-and-then-they-fall-in-love scenario.

This movie is meant to be a romantic comedy, but because of the tragic death of Heath Ledger we can’t watch it anymore without being sad. It was his first major role in an American movie and also the start of his international career.

She’s All That

The pretty boy in high school gets dumped by his hot girlfriend and then takes a bet to turn the ugliest girl around into a potential prom queen. She gets a makeover, turns out to look not that bad after all and after getting to know her better, he falls in love. It’s a classic but it still seems to work.

Unlike the other movies in this list, She’s All That didn’t score that high when it comes to acting. Freddie Prinze Jr had great potential as a ’90s teenage movie star, but he didn’t manage to pursue a serious acting career.

Clueless

If there’s one movie in this list that actually gained a cult status, it’s Clueless. Not because it had such an interesting scenario, but it gave insight into a certain type of youth culture in the ’90s.

Main character, Cher, played by Alicia Silverstone, is a spoiled rich girl with a serious attitude. The storyline is basically about her and her friends living the superficial life in Beverly Hills. Like we already said, the director (Amy Heckerling) rather wanted to portray the behavior of certain teens than coming up with an interesting plot. And she succeeded because up till now, Clueless remains an icon.
