An Update from Spring 2018 Couture Week

For most of us ordinary mortals Couture Week is just overly remote. Only princesses, celebrities and the extremely rich can afford outfits like these and have the occasions to wear them. Also, fashion-wise Couture shows are rarely groundbreaking, nonetheless interesting to have a quick look at. Who doesn’t crave a dose of fairytale once in while?

Couture, Spring 2018

All the shows we’ve seen the past week can be broken down in 3 categories: Is this Couture? This is Couture! and This shouldn’t be called Couture. We decided not to publish any visuals out of the last categorie since it’s just a waste of kb’s. You can always have a look at the Vogue Runway website to see what we’re talking about.

Maison Martin Margiela and Alexandre Vauthier are part of the first group. Not the traditional fairytale looks, yet beautiful masterpieces.

Chanel is an exception to our categories. As we’ve been saying for a few seasons: we’ve seen enough tweed for a decade or five. But there were a few nice silhouettes in the collection.

Giambattista Valli was pretty but not not very exceptional. This collection just met the classic expectations.

The Future is female: Givenchy & Dior

Belonging to the This is Couture! category are Givenchy and Dior. It was Clare Waight Keller’s first Couture show at Givenchy and as to be expected she nailed it (big time). Her collection was a beautiful blend of tailoring and femininity, of blacks, naturals and colors. Miss Keller is one of the main reasons we’d like to attend a red carpet event right now. Also Maria Grazia Chiuri’s collection for Dior was one of the Couture highlights. She was inspired by Argentinian Surrealist Leonor Fini who’s known for painting women in positions of power. The future is female… if we have a look at this week’s shows we’re well on our way.
