Leave it up to Queen Bey to orchestrate a performance ready for the herstory books. Beyoncé proved she came to slay in an all-star performance suitably dubbed ‘Beychella’ by DJ Khaled. And with him the rest of the internet.
When the bees bey buzzin’
Twitter was buzzin’ and the beehive was ready to drag anyone not believing in the epicness of it all. Queen Bey, 36, became the first black woman to headline the Californian music festival. So you know she had to go all out. She did so with a knockout performance. With outfits that went from full-on Egyptian goddess to more subtle nods to the Coachella “uniform” of denim cut-off shorts. Our #MCM Olivier Rousteing made sure she had a look for every show-stopping moment.
From the yellow high school style hoodie (honey anyone?), to the patent black bodysuit of your boyfriend’s dreams, finished with thigh-high boots and a puffer jacket, she slayed them all. The looks where powerful and sexy as fuck but never overshadowing the raw talent portrayed on stage.
Raw like honey
The intermezzos in between the hits were filled with references to modern-day pop-culture, and more specifically Afro-American pop culture. From the chopped and screwed samples paying homage to her “Dirty South” roots to the subtle nods to the “New Freezer” dance and the Black Panther-inspired barets. Both the band and her dancers were rocking. The performance was a celebration of black American culture at it’s finest! With snippets of the infamous Malcolm X speech in the outro of “Don’t hurt yourself” to the dance break in “Mi Gente”, which was the interlude to a dancehall-inspired choreo.
All of that would’ve made any island girl proud. Also, as a fluffy gyal of color, my edges got snatched when she brought out the two aunties during the “Baby boy” segment. That moment looked like so much fun and I can’t wait to recreate that with my aunties at the next family cook-out.
A Child of Destiny
Everything from the choice of songs and the trademark matching khaki sequined outfits, had us shook, dead, resurrected and dead again. We’re going to need another day off to process this epicness. Everything, from the array of hits that included a Destiny’s Child reunion. Complete with the legendary “Say My Name” harmonies. And a guest-appearance by rapper husband Jay-Z joining her to perform their single “Déja Vu”.
Bey for president
Save to say Queen Bey is Queen for a reason and this performance almost makes up for the fact we still need a new album asap (preferably with a Cardi B collab). Luckily, Beyoncé will return to Coachella next weekend. So be sure to keep an eye on our Instagram for all the updates.
