Each year when February comes around (and, let’s be honest, we don’t even have to wait that long, our first red and pink infused press mailing came in somewhere before Christmas), all we see is Valentine’s Day related stuff. They take an item, put some hearts or a shade of pink on it, label it “the perfect gift for your lover” or something along those lines, and that’s it! All day every day of the month.

Don’t worry, this article won’t be a tirade on the consumerist side of Valentine’s Day, or how it’s all about sales numbers, even though there’s a lot to be said about that. No, this article goes out to the ones who don’t really feel like going the safe route for Valentine’s Day. The ones who aren’t here for cute pink lip gloss or a rosey smokey eye. Sure, it looks cute, but what if ‘cute’ isn’t the look you’re going for? Also: if you just feel like giving Valentine’s Day the finger this year, and you wanna show that in your make-up, this one’s for you! Today, we’re taking you through some of the most badass ideas for the perfect anti-Valentine’s Day look.

Dark matters

When you ask people to think of their ideal Valentine’s inspired make-up look, chances are big you’ll get something like ‘soft and dreamy’ or ‘romantic’. A blown out, soft crease, lots of (rose) golds and shimmer, you know the drill. For an anti-Valentine’s Day look, think of the opposite: dark, goth-y smokey eyes. Smudge an eye kohl on your lid and blend it out the slightest bit. Then, line your waterline in black and add some dramatic mascara to ace the look. The perfect example? Taylor Momsen. Liner to cut a bitch an ex

If you really wanna show everybody that you’re not one to mess with, one trick: winged liner to the extreme. Okay, it takes some practise, but once you master it, it’s clear: you’re 100% ready to rule your world. For the perfect, sharp wing, use a little precise liner brush and some gel eyeliner for maximum precision. And if you’re wondering if it’s sharp enough, just ask yourself: “Would it hurt if I stabbed my ex with this?” If the answer is ‘yes’, you’re good.

Lipstick as black as your heart

If you’ve really just had it with the whole love thing, there’s only one thing you can do. No, I’m not talking about dating apps, nor is this the time to get those 23 cats you always said you’d get. No, maybe go for a less drastic option: try black lipstick. I know, I know, it sounds scary, but honestly, it’s not. Not as scary as your ex’s new lover, at least. The key to black lipstick (and basically everything in life) is confidence. If you wear it proudly, you wear it well. Be sure to line your lips, though, just to make sure everything looks neat. You don’t wanna look like you made out with a vampire, right? Or maybe you do. Whatever floats your boat, miss thang!

One thing is certain: whether you just want to try something new to go on a date with your significant other, or you just want to slay on your own, this Valentine’s Day, you’ll be the one stealing hearts!
