While reading the word athleisure, you might expect another collection with a focus on sweatpants and hoodies with logos. But no worries, there are plenty of brands covering that trend already. Marlière is following a course of its own, focussing on the modern woman in motion. The label is about timelessness, luxury, elegance with a sporty and comfortable touch. All its pieces are multifunctional. As strange as it may sound, you can both wear them at work, during a yoga session and for a night out. Who’d ever thought that could be possible.
At the moment the brand doesn’t have an own shop (yet) but you can discover the collection at De Nieuwe Natie, located on the top floor of Shopping Stadsfeestzaal in Antwerp. Besides Marlière, there are a few other interesting projects to discover… definitely with the holidays coming up.
Meet the designer: Martina de Meyer
Designer Martina De Meyer founded Marlière in 2016. Her entire life she was inspired by fashion and art. It was only after a career in modeling and owning a lingerie boutique, that she decided to take the next step. Martina went to study fashion and launched her own label. The life experience and business insights she gained throughout the years are a great advantage. Certain things need to be done when you’re young, for others some maturity can definitely be an asset.
What’s in a name?
The name of the brand is an ode to its muse, iconic Belgian dancer Andrée Marlière. A strong, independent woman with an impressive resume. Actually the label is a dedication to all creative, modern women who dare to dream.
One of the main sources of inspiration for Martina’s first collection was ballet and contemporary dance, which is clearly visible in the imagery. But don’t be mistaken, Marlière isn’t actually about dance clothes. As already said in the introduction, the label focusses on multifunctionality and timelessness. Comfortable, yet chic and feminine pieces that fit the modern women’s way of life.
The collection is made from high quality textiles from Italy and Japan. Fabrics play a very important role in the Marlière story since it’s all about feeling comfortable. Martina mostly works with tulle and high tech fabrics. The overall look of the collection is minimalistic with graphic elements and soft, organic colors.
Besides the look and feel, also honesty is essential for the brand. Strong, aesthetic values simply can’t exist without respect for the human aspect. The whole collection is produced within Europe, in an ethical way and is thus 100% sweatshop-free.
