It’s probably the expression that I like the most when praising the music that I truly love: ‘painfully beautiful’. A combination of words that should be strange but that isn’t to me. And to a lot of other people. And that describes something – in this case: music – that touches one very deeply, often in a saddening way. To the point it almost physically hurts.
There are quite a number of bands, artists and songs that have deserved this adjective over the years. No, Like Mike and Dimitri Vegas, you’re not one of them. But if I would be asked to name one band that has dominated this department over the last years, it would have be The War on Drugs. The release of their newest wonderful black and white video – shot on a boat in their hometown Philadelphia – to their latest single ‘Pain’ is yet another moment that reminds me of that. I can’t wait for the new album ‘A Deeper Understanding’ to come out later this week.
