Lady Gaga’s latest album Joanne and single Perfect Illusion were released some time ago, and people still don’t know what to think about it. But her second single Million Reasons seems to be turning people’s opinions around. Gaga received major praise after some heartfelt live performances of the song. Especially after the Victoria’s Secret fashion show. There’s no arguing about her powerful and incredible voice. But now that Gaga dropped the music video people literally can’t stop talking about it. It’s truly beautiful, and stirs up a lot of emotions.
The music video for Million Reasons seems to be a continuation. It picks up right where we left off with the video for Perfect Illusion. Gaga wakes up in the desert and a bunch of SUV’s drive into the scene. Then she goes back into the ‘normal’ world and gets glammed up into her Joanne persona. The pink hat and ensemble are almost iconic. In between the scenes it cuts back to, supossedly family and friends, rushing to her in the desert to pick her up as she starts crying. She’s also opening up a box that reveals a rosary, with a note that says “Love you, sis”. The internet has been speculating what the possible meaning behind the video is, so here’s my take on it.
A hundred million reasons to walk away
Some time ago, the news broke that Lady Gaga and her now ex-fiancé Taylor Kinney were no longer a thing. It seems like she wrote Million Reasons about her heartbreak. The song questions the state of her relationship and whether it’s worth the fight. This would be the obvious scenario for the video, with Gaga breaking down in the desert, right after living a high in the Perfect Illusion that was her relationship. Her friends and family then support her all the way through the rough patch, and she ends up finding comfort in her music and in Joanne.
But there’s more. Gaga has also been speaking out about another issue in her life. She recently revealed that she suffers from PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) after being sexually assaulted at the age of 19. The video could be a symbol for Gaga’s trauma, and the lack of care with which she was handled in her early career. In the Perfect Illusion video she is being forced to be this money-making machine, being thrown into the crowd, right before breaking down. But then in the Millions Reasons video, her family and friends pick her up from this all time low in her life, and help heal her wounds through creating Joanne.
Fans and critics have been speculating off the hook, but we’ll have to wait for Gaga to reveal what this beautiful music video really means. I’m almost certain that it HAS to be one of the two before-mentioned scenarios. Rumour also has it that the next single will continue the Million Reasons video, so maybe the story will take a turn in the future. I can’t wait to see!
