So yesterday the 2017 CFDA awards took place at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York. In case you don’t know what we’re talking about, it’s the time of the year when the Council of Fashion Designers of America rewards (inter)national talent. A great initiative to support the influence and success of American designers worldwide.
This year two of the most important awards (Womenswear & Menswear) went to Belgian talent Raf Simons. For making Calvin Klein great again and moving his own menswear show to NY. Honestly, he kinda saved NYFW last season. The Fashion Icon award went to Franca Sozzani, former editor in chief at Vogue Italia who sadly passed away earlier this year. Demna Gvasalia received the international award! We couldn’t think of anyone else who should have received this award. The guy’s a genius. Rick Owens got a lifetime achievement award, also well-deserved.
Probably you’re thinking right now what’s also in the back of our minds. A lot of awards won by Europeans while the initiative should actually promote American designers worldwide. Honestly, compared to what’s happening on an international level right now… American designers just don’t seem to be on top of their game. What happened to Alexander Wang, Marc Jacobs? And Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen have a great brand but you can’t compare what they do with the creations of Raf Simons or Demna Gvasalia. Of course there are still Rick Owens and Virgil Abloh (Off-White) who are both very talented. Maybe we just see this the wrong way and is it all about supporting talent beyond the U.S. borders. Which we can only support!
