8 Exhibitions Across Europe To Visit This Summer

It is almost summer, and that means a lot of traveling to new or known destinations. A must when visiting a city is going to a museum. But what is there on display? Don’t worry because we selected eight exhibitions across Europe that are worth a visit. Maybe this list can even help you decide on where to travel to. Scroll down to discover our picks.

Basquiat × Warhol. Painting Four Hands — Paris, France

In Paris, you’re met with an abundance of exhibitions. A temporary one that’s worth a visit is Basquiat × Warhol. Painting Four Hands. As the name might give away, you’ll get to admire the works that icons Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) and Andy Warhol (1928-1987) created together in tandem. Three hundred works and documents of the duo will be on display next to the works of other artists of that era, such as Keith Haring, to visualize the energy of the New York art scene in the ’80s.

‘Basquiat × Warhol. Painting Four Hands’ is on display at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris from April 5 until August 28, 2023.

Man Ray and Fashion — Antwerp, Belgium

Man Ray (1890-1976) is a well-known surrealist photographer who worked for the likes of Coco Chanel, Vanity Fair, and Vogue. The artist brought art and fashion together through his surrealist way of photographing. He inspired and influenced fashion designers from all eras, like Maison Lanvin, Yves Saint Laurent, Martin Margiela, and Olivier Theyskens. Fashion Museum Antwerp’s exhibition combines garments from these artists with Man Ray’s photographs. A must-visit!

‘Man Ray and Fashion’ is on display at the Fashion Museum Antwerp in Antwerp from April 22 until August 13, 2023.

Niko Pirosmani — Humlebæk, Denmark

Although you may not have heard of this sign painter, Niko Pirosmani (1862-1918) is Georgia’s most famous one. The artist mostly portrayed everyday simple Georgian life as a farmer, fisherman, and more. After being discovered, many Russian avant-garde artists were impressed by Pirosmani’s modern style. There are around 50 rarely-seen works of Pirosmani on display at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art on loan from the Georgian National Museum. A great chance to discover this artist, who, unfortunately, is unknown to many.

‘Niko Pirosmani’ is on display at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk from May 4 until August 8, 2023.

Yoshitomo Nara. All My Little Words. — Vienna, Austria

Are you more into modern art? Then we recommend paying a visit to the Albertina Modern Museum in Vienna. They have an exhibition running with works of Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara (1959). His comic-like characters, Angry Girls, gained him international attention since the ’90s. The exhibition at the Albertina shows early experimental work, sculptures, and an installation. It’ll also highlight the direct influence of music on his work, and his working practice. You can already experience the exhibit at home by listening to the soundtrack that goes along with his art, curated by Nara himself.

‘Yoshitomo Nara. All My Little Words.’ is on display at the Albertina Modern Museum in Vienna from May 10 until November 1, 2023.

18th Venice Architecture Biennale — Venice, Italy

It’s almost time for the 18th edition of the world’s biggest architecture festival: the Venice Biennale. This year’s edition will be titled The Laboratory of the Future and curated by Ghanaian-Scottish architect and academic Lesley Lokko. Africa and the African Diaspora will take the spotlight as we’ll get to explore how the world’s youngest and fastest urbanizing continent is a laboratory for innovation. A promising edition, to say the least.

The 18th Venice Biennale is held at different venues across Venice from May 20 until November 26, 2023.

Ron Mueck at the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art

Ron Mueck — Paris, France

This summer, Australian sculptor Ron Mueck’s work Mass will travel for the first time outside of Australia. Where will it travel to? To the Foundation Cartier in Paris. Mueck is known for his human sculptures, which look extremely realistic except for their surprising size. Mass is an installation that consists of hundred giant skulls. An impressive work of craftsmanship.

‘Ron Mueck’ will be on display at the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art in Paris from June 8 until November 5, 2023.

A(R)MOUR – Brussels, Belgium

Clothing means something different to everyone. For some, it’s a way of expressing emotions, but for others, it’s all about protection. This range of different interpretations is what Belgian-Moroccan photographer Mous Lamrabat presents with his new exhibit A(R)MOUR at MAD Brussels. With this project, Lamrabat kept it local and urban by using Brussels as his setting. The photographer found some colorful spots around the capital that reminded him of his home country.

‘A(R)MOUR’ will be on display at the MAD Brussels in Brussels from June 9 until September 2, 2023.

Picasso and El Greco — Madrid, Spain

When going to Spain, it’s difficult to brush over one of the country’s most famous painters: Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). For the 50th anniversary of the artist’s death, the Prado Museum in Madrid showcases works of the artist alongside paintings of El Greco (1541-1614), one of Picasso’s biggest influences. With this exhibit, we’ll better understand the inspiration Picasso took from the Greek Renaissance painter. This way, we’ll learn more about Picasso’s early work, between his Blue Period and Cubism.

‘Picasso and El Greco’ will be on display at the Prado Museum in Madrid from June 13 until September 17, 2023.
