Versace Payed Tribute to Gianni by Bringing out the Original Super Models

Milan fashion week is in full force and so are the Italian brands. On Friday, Versace showed its spring/summer 2018 collection. The show and collection were a total tribute to Gianni Versace, who died 20 years ago. During the runway show, a voice said “This is for you, Gianni”, “This is a celebration of an icon”, “This is the celebration of my brother”, and more.

Versace’s heritage

The collection has Gianni’s name all over it. It was a throwback, but refreshing at the same time! No all-blonde girl squad, but the original Versace beauty and a celebration of the brand’s heritage. As fashion lovers, this is exactly what we needed, and more. Donatella reminded us that a big part of the trends that are ruling the fashion landscape today, wouldn’t be here without her brother Gianni. The entire collection was inspired by the work of Versace in between ’91 and ’95, which are the years Gianni Versace produced some of his most known and characteristic collections.

Some of the silhouettes were pulled directly from the archives. As they were too complicated to replicate in time for the show. One of those archive silhouettes was the black and white ball skirt worn by Naomi Campbell on the Fall ‘92 runway, now worn by Natasha Poly.

As if this collection of blouses, square-shouldered jackets, leggings, catsuits, corsets, trenches, mini sheaths, and maxi skirts wasn’t enough, Donatella had something else up here sleeve to honor her brother. After the final walk of the models who showcased the collection, a display of 5 of the most iconic models ever was revealed. Standing on a little stage, with nothing but gold Versace dresses – straight from the archives, we guess. That’s right, for her grand finale, Donatella called the icons of the 90s to accompany her. She walked with Naomi Campbell, Carla Bruni, Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer and Helena Christensen, to the chorus of George Michael’s “Freedom! ’90. A true tribute to her brother, Gianni Versace.

We don’t get enthusiastic that fast, but this show surely made us scream. It’s been a long time since we were this excited about a collection or a show in general. Looking back at it, this was a beautiful moment full of emotions, passion and nostalgia that we won’t forget for at least 10 years to come.
