The London underground R&B scene is one of the most exciting scenes we know. Young singer Ojerime became one of the key artists of the scene with her first two projects, but took some time off. Two years later, she’s ready to come back with brand new music in the pipeline. We’re exclusively premiering her comeback track “Empty” and had a little chat with her.
R&B is a music genre with many different facets and approaches. Ojerime exactly knows which style she’s going for and it’s suiting her effortlessly. “Empty” has a slightly old-school R&B vibe, that has become rare in the genre over the past few years, but makes the song stand out even more. The track is an exciting freestyle and is the first taste of a new project that will come out somewhere this year. Listen to our exclusive premiere of the song and read our interview below.
Do you find it easy to translate your thoughts into words?
It depends on many factors. the main one being the instrumental. if the instrumental is really powerful I eventually find the words to create a strong song.
What’s the song about or what event inspired the song?
“Empty” is a freestyle about being drained in every area of life, from friendships, career and love life. I offload all of this in a convoluted way because I’m going through so many emotions when writing this. The lyrics are relatable but the overall message is quite cryptic and personal to me.
You’ve been compared to Aaliyah and Destiny’s Child. Does that bring pressure?
Not at all, I grew up in one of the best eras of R&B, so it’s only right it rubbed off on me.
The R&B underground scene in London is getting more popular, because of its dark sounds. What makes it so special in your opinion?
We have garage and grime which are homegrown dark genres, so it’s inevitable that many of us are inspired and able to create a unique subgenre of R&B and that’s what makes it so special.
Any new music coming out that we can look forward to?
Expect a collection of my favorite demos ranging from 2017-2019 working with some of the most talented producers in the game, including; Mansur Brown, Big J and Iamnobodi.
