The 10 Best Releases of the Week

Christmas is just one month away, which usually means that many artists want to release their last songs to end a year full of releases. Every week, we pick the best songs of the week that surprised, moved, or electrified us to guide you through the extensive amount of releases. So turn up the volume because we discovered some true gems this week that deserve a spot on your Spotify playlist. By the way, this is not a top ten because we all love them equally!

1. CHAiLD — Once I’m Gone

On his new song “Once I’m Gone”, we get to hear Luxembourg CHAiLD from another side. His love for ballads comes through in this single, although the production pulls the song in a new direction. We hear some R&B influences and, above all, a very good vocal performance from CHAiLD, who is establishing himself as an artist to keep an eye on. The dramatic “Once I’m Gone” suits him as an artist, bringing a specific individuality that we love.

2. judith — me and my big mouth

Judith already stood out during the competition of MNM Rising Star thanks to her enormous musicality and mature voice, which are the main ingredients of her first song, “me and my big mouth”. On it, we hear how the Belgian pulls out all the stops to steal hearts with a very atmospheric singer-songwriter pop tune. The track has nice touches at the right moments, making it stand out from the rest and making it linger in your mind. Her cheerful voice—with its slight hoarseness—has a high recognition factor, which means she could soon score a first hit with “me and my big mouth”. She is already making our mouths drop.

3. Lana Lubany — CLONES

“CLONES” follows the trend of Palestinian-American Lana Lubany’s recent releases and is interesting, to say the least, in that she sings in both English and Arabic. The two languages connect both cultures she grew up with in a very successful way, setting her apart from a lot of other artists. The nostalgic sound of the guitar melody and the dark lyrics are sure to put us completely under her spell. “CLONES” is the kind of pop track that we don’t hear much of, making this single so irresistible.

4. Loyk — California

Belgian singer and dancer Loyk has been following us for a while, so we’ve known for a few months now that his EP California was coming. Now that it’s finally out, the title track brings another absolute summer feeling. The song has a real freshness thanks to the fun wind instruments that complement his vocal color nicely. The summer months may be far away, but we imagine ourselves at a beach with a cocktail in our hands once more, thanks to “California”.

5. Tamera – Insensitive

Last year, British artist Tamera was chosen by YouTube for the select group of artists in their #YouTubeBlack Voices Artist Class of 2022 and has been among the most talked-about newcomers in the British R&B world for a while now. On her catchy “Insensitive”, she underlines her West African roots and sings about a relationship particularly close to her heart. Tamera’s beautiful voice comes into its own in the various harmonies and shows why all the hype around her is more than deserved.

6. NADIAH — Deception

We’re always especially interested in debut singles, so NADIAH’s first single is no exception. The Ghanaian-British artist has collaborated with Chase and Status in the past, but on “Deception”, she resolutely opts for a sound we can best compare to Kelela. The glitchy R&B song exudes a peace of mind that we appreciate all the more in this busy period. NADIAH immediately makes a strong debut, promising a lot for the future.

7. Nicki Nicole — Frio

Nicki Nicole is already a huge star in Latin America and was recently nominated for four Latin Grammys. On her new single “Frio”, the Argentine artist lives up to her status as a new whirlwind on the Latin scene, playing with influences from trap and salsa. With a few tempo changes, she creates a nice dynamic and raps her pieces with a very sensual flow. She may not have won a Latin Grammy this year, but in the not-too-distant future, she will take home an award with ease if she continues like this.

8. carpetgarden — lonely

A cool music video always gets our attention, so the Los Angeles-based artist carpetgarden did that with ease. Their quirky lo-fi R&B “lonely” spreads a lot of good vibes despite their singing about a difficult relationship where both parties have wrong intentions. The accompanying music video contains a slight horror influence, which also goes very well with the sound of the song. And the guitar wall at the end manages to overwhelm us in a good way.

9. Jasmine Jethwa — Have I Ever Been

In “Have I Ever Been”, a warm guitar melody makes its way toward our hearts and doesn’t leave it for almost three minutes. Anglo-Indian Jasmine Jethwa manages to create an introspective song that sums up how we all feel when things get tough, but at the same time, gets us back on top. The melancholy is definitely there, but there is mostly a hopeful atmosphere on this folky pop. On top of that, Jasmine Jethwa has a very fine voice, which makes you take “Have I Ever Been” to heart particularly fast.

10. Babet — How To Disappear

Babet’s new song “How To Disappear” is anything but commercial pop music and shows that the Dutch singer dares to play with different styles. Usually, when a song doesn’t have a catchy chorus, that’s a big problem but not having that is the strength of Babet’s song. The emphasis is on creating an atmosphere, and the many synths succeed superbly. Her new sound shrouds itself more in mystery and almost beckons with alt-pop, breaking away from the image that hung around her. The quality of her new music will undoubtedly open new doors.
