On Our Radar: Raven Artson Is the Glitch Pop Fever Dream We’ve Been Longing For

We at ENFNTS TERRIBLES always look for the most interesting new artists who inspire us on various levels. And our ‘On Our Radar‘ series allows us to give the spotlight to those interesting artists. The latest talent of our series is Amsterdam-based artist Raven Artson. He is the complete package, making amazing pop songs that musically sit somewhere between Caroline Polachek, Oklou, and Tame Impala while offering a lot visually with beautiful music videos. So we put him in front of the lens of emerging photographer Robin Schraepen in Brussels before his show with Coco & Clair Clair and asked him some questions about his upcoming project.

You’re currently touring with Coco & Clair Clair. What has been the loveliest moment of this tour so far?

Arriving at our Paris hotel around midnight, ordering three glasses of champagne but ending up with three bottles and drinking those in the room while binge-watching Aidan-era Sex and the City.

You’re not only supporting them, but you are also the DJ for their set. How did you get to know the girls?

My friend Maya, who performs as True Blue, introduced me to Claire on an iconic night out in New York. The three of us screamed our voices farewell over Oasis, Britney, and Robbie Williams. That created a forever bond.

You’re based in Amsterdam, which is a city known for its innovations and technology. Does that environment inspire your music?

Definitely. Amsterdam is such a compact city where different disciplines and genres end up in a continuous, subconscious flirt with each other. That’s where I got my experimental nature from.

Besides making music for yourself, you also produce for acts like Sevdaliza. What are the key elements of a good collaboration?

Mutual excitement about each other and feeling comfortable in trying ideas are king. Furthermore, letting go of any judgment and following the energy in the room directly to the most inspired work. Most times terrible, unfiltered ideas end up winning over pre-meditated, familiar ones.

You’re building up towards your new album Transformia. What are the significant differences between this upcoming record and the previous one?

My previous album Cravin is actually a huge compilation pieced together from three older EPs that were made in different time pockets. Because Transformia was made in one go, I could challenge myself to write one cohesive, chronological story.

The single “Rash of Independence” is about embracing the single life. What’s your funniest dating story?

Honestly, I think it’s super funny that I tried dating random people through apps multiple times at different moments throughout my life and never succeeded at that. My wish is to experience at least one Reddit-worthy blind date, so if anyone freaky is reading this please reach out.

Many artists are inspired by love when it comes to music. What are the main themes that inspire you when it comes to songwriting?

Love is an amazing starting point as it’s very relatable, and there are so many ways of experiencing it: from romantic to platonic to parental to self to selfless. If Transformia is an album about love in the external world, my inspiration for the next project is love in the internal world.

What can you reveal about your upcoming album Transformia that you haven’t told anyone yet?

You’ll hear me voicing some moments in Dutch: “Jij laat mij voelen wat liefde is, door jou kan ik houden van myself, je bent een steen waarop ik bouwen kan.”

What are you planning for the next couple of months before the album’s release?

I’m releasing a string of short videos, followed by more touring in the spring and two side projects in the summer.
