On Our Radar: Immerse in Aka Shade’s Y2K Universe on His New Single “Body Bag”

For many artists, releasing a debut album is a turning point in their career and that is precisely what the rising British Y2K pop fantasy Aka Shades is currently working towards. Inspired by his great heroes from the early 2000s, he goes the flirty way for his new single “Body Bag”, wrapping his listeners around his finger in no time through seductive vocals and a blazing production. So it’s about time we introduced “Body Bag” and Aka Shades to you at length with our ‘On Our Radar’ series.

Who is Aka Shades? Introduce us to your project.

Aka Shades has been a lifetime in the making, it’s just an extension of who I am. The version of me that I choose to share with the world through song is a more extreme version. As Aka Shades I get to tell my story and speak my mind, and I can be as angry as I want, as loud as I want, and as unapologetic as I want.

Your music is a mixture between pop, hip hop, and hyperpop. Which artists served as inspiration for your projects?

I really do take inspiration from everywhere. I just live, eat, sleep, and breathe music. Growing up in the late ’90s and early ’00s, I was just consuming the best era of music. I was raised by Britney, P!nk, and Christina, but at the same time, I was so into other genres like Nu Metal. I was obsessed with that combination of Rock and hip hop. So blending genres has just become a natural place for me to exist.

You’ve taken your time to work on your new music. How does your new music differ from your first singles as an artist?

My first singles were very reflective of that time in my life. They feel very experimental and somewhat rough around the edges. I had a lot of bottled-up emotions, and I was still discovering my sound as an artist. I’m very proud of those tracks, but post-pandemic, I’m just coming from a very different place. I like to think of it as a paradigm shift with newfound perspectives. There’s a sense of clarity and maturity, and I think that translates into this next era of music.

“Body Bag” is your first release this year. Why did you pick this song as the first song to start this new chapter?

Since the idea first came to me, I’ve been obsessed with “Body Bag”. It’s just fun and free and slightly bratty, which I love. I wanted to show another side to Aka Shades. I’ve become associated with a darker/moody sound, but don’t get it twisted—I’m still a good time!

What’s the story of the song? How was the writing process?

I’ve always loved that early ’00s blend of pop and hip hop; it’s just so fresh and sexy. I had Britney’s In The Zone CD in my car on repeat for a good month, and the title “Body Bag” stuck in my head. When I brought my ideas to J.AR.J for his production magic, he just got it. Very The Neptunes, very nostalgic, so playful yet still me. Let’s celebrate sex, and let’s celebrate our bodies.

We’ve been told that your first album is coming this year. How are you preparing for this big step?

I’m still very much in the rollercoaster process of putting the album together. The bulk of the work is done, but I’m really immersed in experimenting and fine-tuning. It would mean so much to me to own and distribute this record on vinyl, so that’s also something I’m working towards. And it’s been a while since I’ve been on stage, so a release show and party for sure.

A debut album is always a big moment in someone’s career. What do you want to showcase on this project?

My work is always autobiographical, so this is my coming-of-age story. I just want to share that in the most authentic way possible. I’ve always been inspired by cinema, so I think of my debut album as the soundtrack to my journey so far. I hope that listeners find it to be an emotive and cathartic experience, and they get a glimpse at the many layers that come together to create Aka Shades.

You live in London. How do the city and its culture inspire your music?

I came here as a teenager with the intention of pursuing a life as an artist and entertainer. I came alone with no connections or money behind me. So, honestly, the city as I knew it was really, really tough and really cold. Yes, I’ve made amazing memories on my journey, and I’ve come a long way since then. But if this city gave me anything, it made me realize that no one was going to come and save me. I have to fight for myself and what I want, and I think that comes through in my work.

You’re going for a neon Y2K approach with your visuals. What attracts you to this aesthetic?

I’m a ’90s baby! I was here for that era and loved it the first time around. “Body Bag” was so heavily inspired by the culture of the early 2000s. As I said, I’m very inspired by cinema, and I got the inspiration for the visuals from the motocross scene in Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, which also featured my girl P!nk. It all just felt very “full circle”.

What can we expect from you in the upcoming months?

Currently, I’m just really enjoying the creative process. I would love to collaborate more with other artists and see what magic we can make. I’m so ready to share more of what I’ve been working on. Following the release of “Body Bag”, I want to enjoy that milestone and give the track its moment, but I have a feeling another single will be quick to follow!

“Body Bag” is out now on all platforms. Follow Aka Shades on Instagram.
