Introducing: METTE And Her Fabulous Comeback Song “Mama’s Eyes”

METTE has already been featured in a Rihanna music video, starred in J.Lo’s blockbuster ‘Hustlers’, and will soon be seen in the highly anticipated movie ‘Barbie’ alongside Margot Robbie and Dua Lipa. Yet these days, the future American superstar’s focus is more than ever on her music, and with her new single “Mama’s Eyes,” she has a song that could lead her to her breakthrough. We spoke to the emerging talent to get to know her better.

METTE, you’re finally back with new music. How did it feel to finally release music again?

Releasing “Mama’s Eyes” has been a big relief for me! For the last couple of years, my new music has only been circulating exclusively within my inner circle … To have a song in the world feels like another debut! It’s a cathartic experience to be back again and have the response feel so earnest from my fans!

Your debut single, “Petrified”, was released in 2021. What has changed since that release?

Since the release of “Petrified”, I took time to incubate and refine my mission. At the intersection of dance/pop/R&B, I now have a collection of work to release that matches my ambitions.

Would you say that your vision of music changed in the past few years?

I’ve grown into my songwriting and realized which elements of my process serve me to create from my authentic self. The vision is an evolutionary take on my autobiography … in my music is my DNA.

You starred in the iconic “Lemon” music video for NERD and Rihanna. How do you look back on that experience?

“Lemon” is integral to my journey … the video thrust me into the zeitgeist, in a way. I’m proud of that performance, and I’m excited for fans to see me dance with the same vigor and passion again!

Besides making music, you’re also busy acting and will star in the upcoming Barbie movie. What was it like filming for such a blockbuster?

It was an unmatched masterclass! Seeing Greta Gerwig assemble such a rocket cast and deliver notes to amplify their performances was my favorite part. The costumes were outta this world! It was so fun to feel at ease in the ethos that was created on set: one of pure fun and joy! I met some incredible people along the way that have inspired my music since.

Your new single, “Mama’s Eyes”, is out now. Why is this song so special to you?

During Covid, I was away from family and was incredibly homesick. “Mama’s Eyes” is the remedy to that hollow feeling. The song itself is a celebration of life and the intimacy of unconditional love! I called my Mom during the studio session. The voice sample at the beginning of the record is actually my mother’s voice. “I ams who I ams, love it or leave it, baby …” was her take on life advice.

I prompted her with the question, “Mom, how have you maintained a sense of self-integrity in your life?” She is unapologetically and peacefully herself at all times … I wanted the verses of the song to reflect her. Of course, the production (by Barney Lister) was able to capture the underbelly of my love for dance … that’s a throughline in all my music!

What was the concept behind the music video? What story do you want to tell with it?

I’m so honored to work with my brilliant director Camille Summers-Valli to realize an abstraction of a “coming of age” story. The video boomerangs themes of “mothering” … that of art making, becoming … in an effort to reveal who I’ve grown into as a musician and performer. We used archival footage of my childhood in tandem with elaborate choreography designed by Calvit Hodge to create a work of art that is so true to who I am—past, present, and future.

What can we expect from you in the upcoming months?

I am so excited to deliver the “Mama’s Eyes” music video! There will be some behind-the-scenes content to follow that I hope will give folks a peek into my process. I’ve also determined my next single, and I’m ideating on how to bring it to life! I’m working on new music every week in studio sessions too—with all the positive energy surrounding me at the moment, I want to harness it!

Are you working on a bigger body of work? Is there something you can already reveal about it?

I have a few iterations of a body of work that I’m constantly refining. There are a lot of possibilities on when to release and how … I want to answer my fans’ call for more music and move with the integrity of my vision. It’s a beautifully delicate balance soon to be realized!
