Adidas Club Originals: Bao-An and Faisal About Moving People with Music

Following adidas’ new Club Originals campaign, we’re taking a closer look at the six faces fronting the Belgian campaign. In this duo interview, we are introducing you to Bao-An and Faisal; the two people who know what a great party sounds and looks like. The two men are no strangers to the Belgian party scene. Party organizer and creative director Bao-An highlights Asian artists and music at his parties. While Faisal is a DJ and producer with a loyal following because of his unique sound.

Tell us about your journey. What led you to party organizing and DJing?

BAO-AN: I started organizing events four years ago. There wasn’t anything happening in Brussels for the Asian community, so I decided to introduce and promote Asian hip-hop. The Asian music scene is very underrated here in Europe. We have grown a lot these past four years and are now in Paris too. The goal is to expand it across Europe.

FAISAL: I started DJing a long time ago. I’m going to be honest; I started because I needed the money, and I heard that it was very good pay. (laughs) I’ve also always been passionate about music. When I started DJing, I noticed I was very good at selecting songs, reading crowds, and bringing a certain flavor with different influences and genres. I connected with it, and ever since then, I try to move people.

What was it like organizing an event for the first time?

BAO-AN: It was very challenging and stressful, but luckily, it was a success. The success gave me the motivation to continue. Also, the feedback from the guests is very important to me. If they enjoyed it, I enjoyed it, and that’s mainly what I do it for.

And how was it to perform for the first time?

FAISAL: Stressful as fuck. I started by entering a DJ contest because I needed money, and the main prize was thousand euros. I sent in a mixtape, but I couldn’t DJ. The first time I ever saw a DJ deck in person was the day of the contest itself. I looked up a lot of tutorials on YouTube and tried to memorize where the buttons were. So, the first time I was in front of a crowd, I honestly shit my pants. It was so stressful. I thought it would become less stressful, but honestly, to this day, it’s still nerve-racking.

Do you still get nervous?

FAISAL: Yes, because it’s such a vulnerable position that you put yourself in. You put yourself in a position of judgment. If the crowd doesn’t vibe with me, I carry that home with me. As a DJ, those who play at the party are equally important as the ones organizing, coming to, and working at the party. Everything is just as important. It’s all chain linked.

BAO-AN: It has to be a nice experience for everybody. Everybody is equally important. From the DJ to the girl cleaning the toilets. It all has to work.

How do you make sure that everything runs smoothly?

BAO-AN: Teamwork and trusting others. I have a great team I work with, and I know I can trust them to do things right.

FAISAL: Yes, the importance of a good team and not getting tunnel-visioned. I have my brother, mom, girlfriend, family, and friends, who support me and give me honest feedback. Even when I didn’t do something as well as I thought I did, the people close to me can be honest with me in a respectful way. In this business, you have a lot of yes-men who don’t give any constructive criticism. Without that, you can’t grow and learn from your mistakes.

Do you always try to bring something new to an event or a performance?

FAISAL: You have to. That’s where change comes from. We learn from the past, but you have to add something to it every time. That’s how I see it.

BAO-AN: Yes, I think it’s the same with event organizing. I try to bring something new to every edition because doing the same thing over and over again will not work. Always bring something new.

Is it a challenge to always reinvent what you do?

FAISAL: Yes, because everything has already been done to a certain point. If you organize a party, how do you make it memorable or make people come? We have to stay creative. It can even be the simplest things like door service or the bracelet, but even these small things matter.

BAO-AN: I completely agree. It is a challenge. It’s not easy at all to always be original, but that’s what I like about it.

FAISAL: With DJing, it’s the same. When you do one little transition, it may not be noticeable at first, but afterward, people will realize how different it may have been. It’s small nuances like that that add value.

What event do you look forward to the most?

FAISAL: My own stage at the WECANDANCE festival this summer doing the Faisal Selects. I have DJ EZ and Skream coming, two of my all-time favorite DJs. I have some local legends like Fahad Seriki from Brussels and DTM Funk. And then there’s me. It goes beyond genres and will all be about the vibe of the stage.

BAO-AN: We just had a very big event a few weeks ago in Paris at Palais de Tokyo that I’m still reminiscing upon. A few Korean DJs and artists flew over, and it was great. The next one will also be in Paris for Fashion Week.
