CHLOÉ: “We Should Continue to Put Effort into Making Safe Spaces for Marginalized Communities”

CHLOÉ is among the pivotal figures in the French electro world and has been able to build on her influence by launching her label ‘Lumière Noire’ a few years ago. Just last weekend, she organized a label night in her hometown Paris where she is now considered a living legend. Reasons enough to introduce CHLOÉ to you if you do not know her yet.

The summer is coming to an end, which means that the festival season is almost over. How do you look back at the summer?

I’m just back from a proper summer break, which was needed as most of the year was really intense. I think it’s also necessary to take some time to breathe and get space, slow down your lifestyle. The one-two gigs that I took were happening locally in my beautiful village in the South of France and with Solomun at Pacha in Ibiza, which was amazing.

You’re the founder of Lumière Noire. What’s the DNA of Lumière Noire?

We evolve through club nights like our residency at Rex Club in Paris and arty nights in art centers, such as Centre Pompidou in Paris, 104 … Lumière Noire Records remains open to artists working across genres that can shift away from the club format to tell stories. We mainly release club music but not only. We stay aligned with artists, who have their path or a particular color without necessarily resembling a precise style.

Besides being a DJ, you also toured with a live show for years. Did that change your perspective on music or touring?

Playing live is something in between the studio sessions and DJ sets … It is very fulfilling as it allows me to confront my musical taste and direct that with the audience, build the sounds directly, and play with the elements. I’m happy I can also express my music through live performances especially when it comes to collaborations.

I find a good balance between my soundtrack work, and my own music productions, alongside playing in club and festival DJ sets. Sometimes playing in different concerts or arty places is such a nice change, especially for my live show. We have been touring for a few years now with my duo partner Vassilena Serafimova to present our Sequenza album. Vassilena is such a talented artist, she gives me a lot of positive and creative energy. I have another duo with Ben Shemie (from Canadian Sunns band) called High Season.

We released an album this year called The Call, which was out on Permanent Vacation Records. We started to collaborate a few years ago on one track of my LP. Since then, we’ve become friends and decided to produce music together. It is a completely different process than working with Vassilena and another musical direction. Those two live shows give me a different perspective on my music, too, which makes the live performances inspiring and makes me evolve personally.

You hosted a label event on September 16. What can people expect from a label night hosted by you?

Generally, we invite artists who did some releases on the label, like French DJ and producer Nicol, whose EP was released this year. Or Local Suicide, who will play a hybrid live; they recently released a very nice album. But also artists who are friends of the label, or with whom we feel connected in the sound, like Hardt Antoine who will join the lineup.

People see you as one of the key figures in the electronic scene of Paris. What makes Paris so special for you as a creative?

I started at a time when electronic music was underground, it was mainly happening at rave parties and gay parties in Paris. It was intimate in a way, as we kind of all knew each other. At the time, that kind of music was unknown, but we felt something powerful was going on. I am impressed to see how Paris has changed and has now become one of the big cities where there are many good producers, labels, and good parties happening regularly.

What inspires you in Paris? What attracts you to the city?

Paris, the city where I was born, grew up, and still live. I kind of love and hate Paris. I like Paris when I’m on the move, but it’s not a place where you can settle down. Now, there is a lot of cool music going on in Paris, yes, but in France, generally, too. I met some great artists like Nicol, who has released an EP on my label Lumière Noire. Also, my friends from Il est Vilaine, You Man, and Danse Alice have just released EPs with us, too.

Are your current projects in some way different from what you have done before?

I’m always working on a few tracks at the same time, for collaboration projects, or for me, everything is kind of connected and nourishes each other. I’m in the process of working on some new music for myself. I hopefully can tell you a bit more soon! What I can say is that it’s exciting to go back to some solo production work, especially after having released a lot of projects involving collaborations. It’s refreshing to move forward.

If you could imagine a perfect environment to listen to your music, what would that setting look or feel like?

We should continue to put effort into making safe spaces for marginalized communities. We should keep those protected places from violence and harassment and continue to educate people. The perfect environment would be happening in this reality.
