I started painting at 18 while studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. However, drawing has always been part of my life. Since childhood, I always had a deep love for comic books, which is my first field.
Do you remember the first comic book you saw as a child?
When I was in elementary school, we had a habit of going to the library each week. Then Dragon Ball, a manga from Japan, drew my attention for the first time. It is still one of my favorites. Also, I have been, and still am, addicted to cartoons.
Your earlier paintings often depict women, women’s physiques, and motherhood.
I’m very close to my mother. The theme of motherhood is sensitive to me. I wanted to share a story about a mother who would do anything to protect her child. Usually, I depicted the mother in the act of protecting her kid. I remember, in 2021, I made a painting on the same topic but completely different; I pained a mother with her child who was dead (Loss of Innocence,2021). I am originally from Congo, and it was me reflecting on all the bad things that have happened there. Besides that, I wanted to depict common life experiences, both in my paintings and comics.
