Our Favorites From Antwerp Royal Academy Ma 2025: Paula Van Dyck

On the 6th–7th of June, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp hit the stage with its annual runway show, once again reclaiming Antwerp’s status as an avant-garde fashion capital. We are honored to present one of our favorites, Paula Van Dyck, Belgian, 2025 MA Fashion Department graduate, and her collection Black Mascara.

Superficiality as self-empowerment

For Van Dyck, her final collection at the Royal Academy began with self-reflection on the role make-up routines had in her life, seemingly superficial, but in fact an important self-empowerment act. “Superficiality is often received as something shallow or empty, but I wanted to use it as an empowerment tool for women,” Van Dyck noted. “This collection examines how superficiality can become an act of self-preservation and an emotional armor… It was also a very personal project this year, more personal than the previous ones.”

“All the fabric manipulations, the fringes, and everything is cut by hand to represent this beauty routine, almost as a meditation for myself,” said Van Dyck. The collection is a masterful exercise in sculptural and dynamic silhouettes. Feathers, latex, leather, and metal, Van Dyck uses to balance seduction and edge with protectiveness and sensuality. The silhouettes reflect their defensive nature, yet feel confident and almost wildly dangerous.

Transforming artifice into authenticity

“I worked a lot with leather because it’s a strong material, it has a protective nature, but is also very feminine and delicate. And then I combine it with softer materials … I prefer real leather because it has these flows that fake leather does not have, and I think it makes it more interesting and more alive.” The silhouette comes first, Paula explained. “I like bold ideas for the shape. Finishing and details are also important, but they come later. I also get ideas from fabrics because I get them in advance, that is how the collection starts.”

Notably, each look has a headpiece either made of metal chains, feathers, and fur, or artificial hair, reinforcing the idea of performative transformation. “The idea was that the first thing you do when in emotional turmoil is cut your hair or dye it, it was important to emphasize that… I hope that my collection moves people and inspires them, regardless of whether they know the story or not. That was the goal.”

Paula’s dream internship? “With Jonathan Anderson, but everything has been changing so fast lately — laughs — I want to have some experience, but in the end, the goal is to start something of my own.”

The MA collections are on view on the 27th and 28th of June, 12:00 to 18:00 at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Mutsaardstraat 31, 2000 Antwerpen, opening on the 26th of June at 18:00. For more information, visit the Academy’s website.
