All The Things You Need To See And Do At Horst Arts & Music Festival 2023

Do you still have no plans for the upcoming weekend? If you want to dance to the beats of fabulous DJs, admire some great art installations, and discover unique stages, then Horst Arts & Music Festival 2023 is where you need to be. The festival is held on 5, 6, and 7 May in Vilvoorde and is the best way to kick off the festival season.

Scroll to discover our guide to what and who to see. But keep in mind: it was a tough selection to make.

DJs

FRIDAY: On the first day, you want to make sure that you’re on time for the festival. Two Belgium-based DJs (Mab’ish and Ben Kamal) are sure to start the weekend off great. Later that day, you should go to the most intimate stage, the Moon Ra Pavilion, to dance with Fais Le Beau. The sun will set during his performance, which ensures a moment to remember. To end the night, you can either join bigshot Skin On Skin or the b2b-set of icon Nosedrip and boundary-pusher Aroh.

SATURDAY: After an energizing night of sleep, the BIPOC activist collective For All Queens!and later, Horst resident Kuba “97 & Rino are the perfect way to start the day off with dancing. At the same time, you can dance your heart out at the State Of Play stage with DTM Funk & Errol. When their set is over, don’t leave! There is a surprise performance planned by an artist who is not yet announced. In the evening, you’ll have another big decision to make; will you end the day with Bjeor & Fafi Abdel Nour, Aliaor Mama Snake & Spekki Webu? It makes for a difficult decision that we can’t help with.

SUNDAY: The place to be on the last day of Horst is the main stage, starting the day off strong with local artist Vieira. We suggest you spend the last five hours with Job Jobse, followed by the sibling duo S-Candalo at the main stage. But if you want to close at a more intimate stage, then we recommend seeing Dbridge & Donato Dozzy. Whatever stage you choose, a great closing set to end the joyful weekend is guaranteed.

Stages

STATE OF PLAY: This year, the main stage will transform from an indoor industrial warehouse to a mainly outdoor stage that revolves around concrete sewage pipes. Stand Van Zaken, a young collective of (interior) architects (Stefanie Everaert, Caroline Lateur, and Theo De Meyer), is responsible for this metamorphosis. The use of simple and ordinary building materials that are being positioned in an esthetic manner is what they’re known for. We’ll discover how the stage will take shape during the upcoming weekend festival.

LE SOLEIL ROUGE: The space where Marinella Senator’s Bodies In Alliance once was, makes way for Le Soleil Rouge by Bruther. The award-winning architectural practice with founders Stéphanie Bru and Alexandre Theriot is known for its public projects. Besides that, Bruther stands for socially engaged architecture, using mainly industrial raw materials. What can you expect to see at Horst? A colorful, lively, and playful design.

Expo

This year, Horst commissioned artists to create an homage to those who make a city into an actual city. These specific in-situ commissions aim to have a broad impact beyond Horst’s activities. We’re excited to gaze upon the impressive works of artists like those of Belgian artist Sharon Van Overmeiren. She’ll ensure visitors can cool down with a permanent monument that integrates an ancestral air cooling system.

Want to escape the festival craze? Then you can find refuge in an intimate garden created by the Brussels-based Angolan-Zambian artist Maria Muehombo aka M I M I. There’s even more to see: like the new roof for the Rotunda stage made by Greek fashion and art collective Serapis, and a pavilion with draped concrete by French artist Marc Leschelier. We’re ready to see how all these works will take shape at the festival grounds.
