When collaborating with EASTPAK, Shaïne knew instantly what bag she wanted to make, “I chose a bum bag because I used to wear them a lot when I was younger.” The bum bags have the statement “Protect the Protest,” or “Protect Trans Lives,” embroidered on them. “The messages are intense but very important when you see what’s happening in France and other places.” All the profits from the bags will go to Le Refuge. “I’m happy I can do this for my community,” Shaïne says proudly.
Presenting myself
Marginalized fem queers are at the forefront of this campaign. It’s a group that’s continuously praised in the media but faces harassment on the streets. Shaïne, a fearless young trans woman herself, is also the face of the campaign. “I’m not used to being in front of the camera, and this was the first time doing this after my transition,” she says. “It really helped me to see myself in another way and to be proud of who I am.”
