Buying Vintage and Secondhand: Our Tips and Favorite Places

With more and more people realizing the damage fast fashion does to our planet, sustainable alternatives have been emerging as powerful solutions. One such solution is shopping secondhand. Not only is it often more affordable, the chances of finding one-of-a-kind vintage pieces are very exciting. In this guide, we’ll share tips for a successful shopping trip as well as our favorite online and offline shops.

First, you have to decide if you want to shop online or at an actual brick-and-mortar store. Both have pros and cons. Let’s get into it.

Online secondhand shopping

There are many places to buy secondhand clothes online. Some sites allow you to filter by size, so you’ll only see items that fit you. Most online stores have an app, which makes the notification function very handy if you’re looking for items that tend to sell out fast. Finding items that are brand new or from recent collections is also very easy to do online. If you’re looking for a pair of Zara heels, check online secondhand stores first. You might be able to find the exact heels for half the retail price.

Tip: Sort by ‘newest first’ to see items that have been uploaded recently. This is a great way to find amazing deals, especially when it comes to designer items. If you sort by designer brand and ‘newest first‘, you’re increasing your chances of finding designer gems at great prices.

Tip: Narrow down your search as much as possible. Besides filtering by size, try entering specific terms. This includes prints, colors, fabrics, style, fit, etc. It’s more likely you’ll find what you’re looking for by searching for ‘red tartan vintage skirt size 38, rather than endlessly scrolling through thousands of skirts.

Tip: Shop off-season. April and May are the months in which rich fashion aunts are spring cleaning out their closets, so that’s the ideal time to look for coats and winter boots. Shop for summer clothes in late fall/early winter.

Tip: Inspect photos for discoloring and other imperfections. It’s easy for a seller to mask a stain or a hole. If there are imperfections, ask the seller about them and ask if you can bid on the item for a lower price.

Tip: Add every item you like to your favorites. Often apps and websites will send you a notification if the price drops, or you can revisit the item later. For example, If something was uploaded four months ago, it’s more likely that the seller will accept any bid, as they want to get rid of the item. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Secondhand and vintage stores

In nearly every big city around the globe, there are thrift stores and smaller vintage shops. It can seem quite overwhelming to enter a shop with a lot of clothing racks and no organizational system. Shopping at a secondhand store takes patience, as you will have to sift through the entire rack piece by piece. It makes finding a gem all the more rewarding and exciting. Few things in life are as fun as going to a secondhand shop and browsing racks of archival designer clothes and one-of-a-kind vintage pieces.

Tip: Thrift stores (such as Think Twice and Kringwinkel) often have great sales. Score the best pieces for just a few euros during their sale days. Even more ‘generic’ secondhand shops sell beautiful designer pieces, which are amazing finds on sale days. Yes, they will be hidden in between a ton of other items, but nothing beats the euphoric feeling of finding a vintage designer item.

Tip: If you’re going on a shopping spree, do secondhand shopping first. It’s inconvenient to browse through a crowded thrift store with bags full of previously purchased items.

Tip: Basic button-ups, T-shirts, or other layering clothes are easy to find at a secondhand shop. There’s no need to buy a white button-up shirt of mediocre quality at a fast fashion shop when you can find it for a quarter of the price at a thrift store. If you want to invest a little more money: check out vintage designer shops for pieces of amazing quality

Tip: Go in with zero expectations and a lot of imagination. If there’s something you like the print of, try imagining it in a different silhouette. Even though it might not fit or look flattering, you can use the fabric to create something else (if you know how to sew). Lowering your expectations will make thrift shopping more exciting, as you’ll be surprised by all the stuff you can find! Using scarves or lace doilies as hair accessories, cutting pants into shorts, or wearing a skirt as a top; the possibilities are endless.
