Carhartt WIP Meets Kenan Vanel Lamiel Photographed by Stig de Block

Carhartt WIP joins forces with Belgian photographer Stig de Block to highlight and uplift young creatives. ENFNTS TERRIBLES presents the photoshoot and an interview with a young aspiring painter and comic book artist student at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Kenan Vanel Lamiel.

I started painting at 18 while studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. However, drawing has always been part of my life. Since childhood, I always had a deep love for comic books, which is my first field.

Do you remember the first comic book you saw as a child?

When I was in elementary school, we had a habit of going to the library each week. Then Dragon Ball, a manga from Japan, drew my attention for the first time. It is still one of my favorites. Also, I have been, and still am, addicted to cartoons.

Your earlier paintings often depict women, women’s physiques, and motherhood.

I’m very close to my mother. The theme of motherhood is sensitive to me. I wanted to share a story about a mother who would do anything to protect her child. Usually, I depicted the mother in the act of protecting her kid. I remember, in 2021, I made a painting on the same topic but completely different; I pained a mother with her child who was dead (Loss of Innocence,2021). I am originally from Congo, and it was me reflecting on all the bad things that have happened there. Besides that, I wanted to depict common life experiences, both in my paintings and comics.

Today, the main subject of your artworks are skies and seascapes. How did you transition to depicting nature?

In 2022, I had my first atelier, with a really beautiful view of the forest, very calm, with no cars and no people around. At that moment, I was lost about art and what I wanted to paint. I wanted to move away from my usual themes. And then I looked outside, and I saw the beautiful summer sky. It made me recall the moments I went to the park with my family and how I observed the clouds moving and imagined what form looked like. At that moment, I realized that the most beautiful thing on earth was just in front of me. And all people share it. Also, the sea. It’s above everything.

Also, I grew up in a Christian family, and I’m purely Christian. I felt that the best way to be closer to God is to paint his creation. I am also inspired by the work of Mark Rothko, the atmospheric aspect of his paintings. I want to create a universe that people can breathe in when they look at the painting. I always listen to ambient music while painting, often Brian Eno, and I’d like to translate it into my work.

What aspects of your artistic expression are the most important to you?

For the paintings, I would say, color combinations. And the size of a canvas. In the future, I would like to paint bigger because one of my objectives is to create an illusion that you can enter the painting, to feel the wind or the light hitting you. These elements begin with color. For comics, I prefer black and white. The depth of the story is important and so that people can recognize themselves as protagonists. Emotion is another important aspect. My main character is a girl, but it is my vision, my truth, and my ways of acting. Not that she is me, but there is a part of my own identity that I put into her character.

When I draw a story, I also take time to draw birds, or insects, trees, water, and any kind of elements. I feel like God created so many elements in life. It would be a shame to just ignore them.

Do you have a work uniform?

I always paint wearing my white T-shirt, red pants, and the Yeezy foam runners. I am a fan of Yezzy, and I used to wear them all the time, but the more I saw everybody rocking the same shoes, I decided to use them just for painting. And outside, I can’t wear the same every day; I need some variety.
