Exclusive Premiere: Mimi Waterfall Embraces Herself in Music Video of “Deeper”

The Antwerp-based songstress Mimi Waterfall has come to terms with herself as an artist and a person. With her debut EP, ‘Solar Return’, she found a way to express herself and give her emotions the right outlet, which helped her grow on various levels. For her single “Deeper”, she connected with her creative friends to create a visual interpretation of the song and give it a deeper meaning. We’re exclusively premiering the music video and had a chat with Mimi about her heartfelt project.

Who is Mimi Waterfall? Introduce yourself.

My name is Mimi Waterfall, aka goddess in the flesh, aka the original Bantu princess. Also known as Mimi Mesmerizing.

What’s the story behind your artist name?

I find it important to stay connected to the elements. Water is such a powerful tool to cleanse yourself physically but also spiritually. I wanted to incorporate that in my artist name. Water also reminds me to take the path of least resistance. Water doesn’t push its way through, but it’s still a force to reckon with. That’s the energy I’m going for.

Your debut single was released almost two years ago. What has changed since then?

Lots of growth and integrating lessons. I keep on learning so much about myself. I’m blessed to live a full life that comes with a full spectrum of experiences: good and bad. I’ve grown more into myself and am at a point where I embrace who I am as a person, woman, and artist. I’m showing myself more grace and being less hard on myself. I want to view myself as a slow burn; I take some time to warm up, but when I’m good to go, it’s on.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from that first release?

To let go. The song is literally called “Release”. Being able to listen to myself and not be swayed by other people’s opinions. It’s up to me to keep listening to my own intuition and to know what it is I want. I’ve learned to take what resonates and to leave the rest in general.

The debut EP is a deeper introduction to you as an artist. What defines your sound? Who are your main inspirations?

I would define my sound as honest. There are lyrics in my songs I say regularly in day-to-day conversations. Regardless of what direction I choose to go musically, I need to be able to say what I have to say. If you’re close enough to me, you’ll know what I’m singing about. For everyone else, I leave it up to their imagination. That’s the beauty of art: everyone has the right to have their own interpretation.

I love music as a whole, but if I had to name a few genres: I’m into reggae, afrobeats, and R&B right now. Those genres are continuously evolving but still sound fresh and come in many different variations. You can blend them, play with them and still get something that sounds amazing. Music is such a fluid thing. I love when you’re able to incorporate different elements of something and still make it your own.

Different artists inspire me for different reasons. My favorite artists inspire me because of the diligence they put into their work, the writing, and the way they can convey a message in their own unique way. I feel like my faves have ownership over what they do and how they choose to. I’d like to believe that all of these artists also fit the description of a slow burn. Their success today is the result of years of honing their craft and not trying to stay relevant.

What do you want to say with this project?

Solar Return is me looking back at the past two-three years. What I’ve learned about myself and others around me. Who I want to be. It’s about embodiment. Standing in the sun and not shying away from the limelight. I like to say that my songs are reminders. Sometimes we forget about the beautiful beings we are, and I want to remember myself and others. There’s so much noise around—distracting us—that it’s necessary to have music that allows us to tap back in.

You’re working as an independent artist. What are the biggest advantages and disadvantages of being independent?

I can’t say ’cause I can’t compare the two, but being an independent artist allows me to grow through trial and error. I’m learning to do things myself, which can sometimes be a tedious process. At the same time, it’s all part of the journey and very fulfilling when I get the results I was aiming for. Good things take time.

Besides releasing the EP, there’s a gorgeous music video accompanying the release. Why did you choose “Deeper” as the key track?

Deeper is a song for everyone who has been in love and wants to be loved. It’s the perfect track for the summer season. The weather is nice, people are feeling good—looking good. It’s a track to enjoy anywhere with anyone who has the right vibe. Sometimes you just want to catch a little wine with a sweet one, and “Deeper” allows just that.

How did you approach the making of the music video?

I think a lot of it started with a feeling: being able to pinpoint what I wanted to say and portray. It kinda grew from there. We (Gerson Ntiti & Sara Bosanza) really wanted to translate the vibe of the song into visuals, and I feel like we did that. It’s fun, sexy, and the looks are chef’s kisses. Shout out to Oemer, Jessica, and Anaïs for holding it down.

You worked with some close friends on this project. How was it to work on such an emotional project together?

Before being my people, Sara en Gerson are very talented creatives in their own right. The fact that we have a personal relationship allowed for a safe, creative space to exist, but when we were working, we were working. While the process of shooting was a lot of fun, it was important to stay focused on what was at hand and not let our banter take the upper hand.

They get me, know how to portray me in a beautiful way, and I’m very grateful to have people on my side who want to see me grow. Being an artist comes with the occasional existential crises, and they knew how to gracefully navigate that and affirm me when I wasn’t seeing myself clearly. That goes back to stepping into the light and the whole concept of Solar Return.

What does Solar Return mean to you?

Solar Return is about embracing oneself fully, talking your shit, and basically taking up space. The sun shines without asking anyone’s permission, and so do I. You might love it, you might hate it, but it’s going to happen regardless.

What can we wish you for the future?

For me to be able to use my many talents and to multiply my blessings by using them. To be able to grow in everything I do and to reap the fruits of my labor. Nipsey Hussle said, “I want every penny that’s mine, nothing more, nothing less,” and that’s exactly what I intend to do.
