From Georgia With Love: Matériel

Ten years ago we would have probably laughed when someone said there’s a fashion scene in Eastern Europe, let alone Georgia. Nowadays, the cards have been redealt. With names such as Demna Gvasalia and Sofia Tchkonia (Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tbilisi’s founder), there’s nothing left to laugh about. Also, Georgian brands such as Matériel are performing well with a fresh view on wearable womenswear.

Matériel began in 1949 as the largest factory in the USSR for women’s ready-to-wear. Seven years ago, it rebranded as a high-end label under several designers. Currently, Aleksandre Akhalkatsishvili and Lado Bokuchava, who both also have their own collections, are the creative directors behind the brand. In a way Matériel also operates as an incubator, giving a platform to young designers in order to help them launch their own business.

The collection of Matériel is made up of clean looks, with an edgy, yet feminine touch. It isn’t the best runway collection, but is that always essential? What’s more important is: do we want to buy it and do we want to wear it? The answer is yes. Both at Frankie Shop in Paris and on major online webshops such as Mytheresa and Net-a-porter, the collection caught our attention. Matériel is definitely a brand that young women with a sense of style would want to wear.
