Gayle: “I’m Writing More Songs So I Can Release My Debut Album Mid-Next Year”

With a promising future ahead, the 19-year-old American singer Gayle continues to push the boundaries of her artistry, exploring new musical styles and collaborating with industry professionals. Her passion, talent, and unwavering dedication to her craft made her go viral with her world hit “ABCDEFU”, but she’s showing that she’s far more than that and is having the greatest year of her life. Besides casually going on tour with mega stars like Taylor Swift and P!nk and having multiple festivals in her schedule, she’s determined to make a lasting impression by releasing more music. We caught up with the rising star backstage at Rock Werchter to keep up with her plans.

Currently, you’re on a festival tour and joining P!nk in European stadiums. What does your day look like?

It’s looking actually pretty good. We have some interviews, then I have my show, and I’m done for today. My band and I are really good friends, so we just hang out and watch movies. I also make them film a bunch of TikToks of me. I’m going on my own headlining tour in the fall in North America, so I’m trying really hard to market it, but I’m so bad at marketing things myself. I’m forcing them to make videos with me as they’re also going on tour with me. What’s fun about being out here is that I get to have new opportunities and gigs. That’s cool. Tomorrow I have an off day, but I might fill that off day with something. Today is a chill day, so I’m very excited.

You’re not only doing festivals, but you’re also a support act for Taylor Swift and P!nk. What was it like to learn that Taylor Swift and P!nk wanted you to tour with them?

With Taylor, I met her, and she asked me if I toured. She kind of asked if I open up for people, so it definitely put the thought in my head: “What if she wants me to open up for her? I don’t know what she wants from me, but she can have everything she wants!” It probably took about a month to get the offer, but my manager and I got the call when we were in a hotel room. We just flipped our fucking shit. I scared my bandmates a bit and told them that I needed to talk with them immediately. They were thinking that they were getting fired, but then I just said, “WE’RE OPENING FOR TAYLOR SWIFT!” I ordered two ice cream cakes and ate them on the floor with plastic forks.

With P!nk, her team was asking for submissions. My agent Marissa Smith, who has been my agent since I was fourteen, Facetimed me and my manager while playing songs of P!nk. She called me at eight in the morning and asked if I wanted to open for P!nk. Normally, I would be pissed if someone called me that early in the morning, but they can wake me up with that news any time. To play stadiums this year is absolutely ridiculous.

It’s crazy that you had your breakthrough during lockdown and are now able to play stadiums.

The excitement and anxiety play hand in hand. I’ve been really anxious and excited because those two things flip-flop. I wasn’t particularly prepared to be a stadium-playing act this year. When the opportunities came, I tried my best to rise to the occasion. I was in rehearsal and tried my best. It’s very scary, but I’ve learned that I can do things in spite of the fact that I’m scared. That’s been a very valuable lesson in my life. Even with “ABCDEFU”; I was fucking terrified. I didn’t know what I was doing and where I was going with my career. For the past years I was really scared, but I’ve been trying my best, and it’s also been really fun.

You’re still only 19 years old and already doing so well. How is it to be a young, upcoming artist in the industry?

I have my friends that I have been friends with for a very long time. I’ve been lucky that I have very valuable, long-term friendships in my life. That keeps me feeling like I have a life as a teenager. All my friends are in college, and I get to visit them. I’m on tour and can’t go to college, so sometimes it feels a bit isolating for me to leave my friends. The industry is currently a mix of the two where a lot of the industry is controlled by adults, but a lot of the music-making is from the young, upcoming artists. It’s hard to gain respect when you’re young in the industry, but I also feel like all the young artists can get together and can relate to each other. When I was younger, I was always trying a little too much to be professional and respectful. I learned to let a little more loose on that.

You’re part of this new generation of artists that picks up the guitar again. Who were the artists that inspired you to make the music you’re making right now?

It’s interesting. I grew up in Texas, and I live in Nashville. I started in country music, and almost everybody in country music plays guitar. I wanted to play songs in Nashville and Texas, so I learned to play the guitar so I could play songs. I don’t know if there’s anyone in particular that I saw doing that. I just wanted to back myself up. I’m a very stubborn and independent person, so I just wanted to do everything for and by myself. Alanis Morissette was a big inspiration—especially for my live performance—and inspired me to go more alternative with the music. I also adore Avril Lavigne. She picks up a guitar and always rocks it. Joan Jett is also a real big inspiration when it comes to live music. She even had her ribs broken for being a woman in rock music. She was really ahead of her time. I just love rock, badass, female icons.

When are we getting your debut album or a new EP? Is that something you’re working on?

I was going to put out an album this year, and then I got the tours. I got super terrified because I’m a perfectionist. I want my first album to be the best I possibly can do. I felt like I couldn’t be the best thing that I possibly could be at touring and make the best album I possibly could make at the same time. I’ve been writing songs this year, put them out as singles, and I’m on tour, so I’m trying to appreciate this moment in my life. Later this year, I’m trying to write more songs so I can release my album mid-next year. I’m a perfectionist, so who knows when I’m able to finish it?
