Interview: Chi on Her Musical Pivot and the Meaning of Strong

chi has undergone quite an artistic transformation in recent years. Dropping “Virgo” from the latter half of her name to become simply “chi”, the London-based Nigerian artist has moved from making soft, neo-soul songs to capturing punk revival bops. ENFNTS TERRIBLES caught up with chi after her unmissable performance at Dr Martens’ ‘Live Strong’ event in London to learn more.

You released your record I’ve Seen The Lizard People last month. It cements the pivot in sound from your earlier releases and a new era of artistry. What led to this shift?

The shift was just me finding my actual sound. When I first moved to London, I was hearing so much soul music everywhere, and I just got really influenced by that. I realized it was a bit of a force as it didn’t come that naturally to me, so I just started experimenting. 2020-2021 were crazy years for me—I just tried everything and kept the best parts.

The record’s title links to the Lizard People conspiracy that prominent societal figures are extraterrestrial lizards in human skin trying to gain power over the Earth. Would you say the record has a message about things not being as they seem?

Ah, well, I was kind of playing with the idea more as a metaphor, kinda like, “I’ve seen it all”. But in a lot of tracks on the project, I talk about confusion in love and things that seem to feel one way but, in reality, are not.

Which celebrities do you think are likely to be Lizard People?

Pretty much every billionaire because how and why?

What were some of your main influences when making the record?

Gosh, literally every song I ever liked. I’d say this project touches every one of my moods at the moment. My friends—first and foremost—I have a lot of friends who make crazy music, and it’s super inspiring. Also, I listen to people like Paris Texas and Teezo Touchdown but am also very much still influenced by my old GOATs like Blink 182, The Veronicas, Milky … The list is pretty much endless.

How did the record take shape? Did you set out with a particular approach or goal in mind?

Not at all, that’s why it’s more of a mixtape. The process was super random.

There are some great names sharing tracks with you: DETO BLACK, Cruel Santino, Namasenda, Mowalola, and Moyosworld. How did these collaborations come about?

These are just my friends. I love their music so much, so certain songs that I could hear them on, I asked them to go on.

You recently performed at Dr. Martens’ ‘Live Strong’ event. What does being strong mean to you?

Being strong is all about being true to yourself, not allowing yourself to diverge off your own path.

Lastly, if you had to pick one song of yours to get new listeners into your music, which would it be and why?

Wow, that’s a hard question because all the songs are so different … I don’t know, maybe “Belly Ache”? That’s kind of my mood currently. But for real, you’d need to listen to the whole thing to really understand me!
