Interview: Frost Children Took Us Around New York City After Their DJ Set at Times Square

Surrealism is not just an art form you see at museums but could also be the perfect description for the music of the sibling duo Frost Children. Famous and infamous for their frenzied productions and overpowering soundscapes, they have made their mark on hyperpop and put themselves on the map as pioneers-to-be. To highlight their new album, ‘SPEED RUN’, they played a special DJ set at Times Square in New York City. Afterward, we headed into town with Angel and Lulu in search of a snack.

If you could rewrite your Wikipedia page, how would you describe Frost Children?

Angel: Frost Children is the collective of sibling duo purveyors of enterprise Lulu and Angel Frost, whose lifetime accomplishments have impacted society in multiple dimensions, such as music and culture. Their lifetime-spanning Gesamtkunstwerk has been called “confusing” and “sweet” by many news platforms that you may recognize.

What’s the funniest rumor or comment you’ve heard about Frost Children?

Lulu: Around sunset, before a show, we played in a botanical garden, we had just finished soundchecking and went to the green room, which was this nice tent under a willow tree. One of the promoters of the show walked into the tent to tell us updated set times, etc. And on her way out, she asks, “Hey Lulu, is it true that you once wrestled with a live cheetah?” I was appalled. I told them I would never do such a thing, but that if I had done such a thing, I would have absolutely won. She agreed that it would indeed be an unfair match.

You just released your new album, SPEED RUN. What should people know before listening to this project?

Lulu: Remember when Squidward tells Spongebob to “empty your mind …” Yeah, ’nuff said.

What’s the ideal setting to listen to the eleven tracks on SPEED RUN

Lulu: Picture yourself in a boat on a river. With, let’s say, for example’s sake, tangerine trees and perhaps a nice marmalade sky.

Angel: At the club while your scrolling on Instagram in line for the bathroom

Is there a golden ingredient you’ve added to every song on the album?

Approximately four drops of awesome sauce per track, actually!

What’s the main difference between SPEED RUN and all the other projects you put out before?

Speed Run is more refined, and our first divinely-inspired record.

You’ve just toured the album in the US. What’s the coolest memory you’ve made on this tour?

Angel: I liked signing things after the shows. I signed a forehead, neck, left my bite marks on someone’s Speed Run CD … In today’s modern age of technology, physical souvenirs—especially bites—are worth more than gold.

Lulu: I like the part where I hit a drum with a stick.

What can people expect from a Frost Children show?

Lulu: Total and utter chaos and confusion. Some wrong notes, some right notes, but lots of magic nonetheless.

Angel: You can expect your socks to be knocked and your ears to be messed.

Hyperpop is an ever-evolving genre. What’s your definition of hyperpop in 2023?

Lulu: My grandma always used to tell me, “A trouble shared is a trouble halved.” She made great pumpkin pie.

What else can we expect from you this year? More music, more shows?

Angel: More of all content, in mind-boggling amounts, and the laying of a framework for a massive franchise empire.

Lulu: OC!
