Interview: Introducing Australia’s Industrial Pop Princess Muki

She might live in ‘down under’, but she’s ready to get to the top. Australia’s pop hope Muki is preparing herself for a phenomenal year with a new EP coming out in the summer and lots of exciting things ahead. Since her recent single “I Make Boys Cry” can’t get out of our heads, we decided to meet the singer who already worked with pop royalty Slayyyter via Zoom and talk to her about everything that’s going on in her life.

Your first steps as an artist were already quite remarkable. How do you look back at your first releases?

I was super lucky with the first release I did because Australia has such a small market, it allowed me to grow really organically. I hit some of my first milestones pretty early in my career, which is really awesome. Would I change anything? I feel like as an artist, you always want to perfect things, so I’d probably go back and rewrite the lyrics, but then it would be a different song. Where I am now as an artist, I’m super excited because I have the right team around me and all the songs that I’m writing now are more authentic to me than three years ago.

You’ve opened up for 5 Seconds Of Summer in arenas. Did that experience make you realize something about your music?

It definitely put a little hunger inside of me. Once you performed in front of thousands of people, you kind of don’t want to go back. That experience also taught me about being resilient because I was put on those shows pretty last minute, so I didn’t have a lot of time to prepare myself for my biggest shows I’ve ever played. That taught me what I can achieve, to be a bit braver, and take opportunities when they come.

You love PC Music and 80’s pop icons. Where does the fascination come from?

It started at my early EP. The producer I was working with introduced me to PC Music and I just fell in love with the sound design, textures, and all of these intricate details, which is so clever and cool. With the 80’s stuff, I always loved Robyn and she uses a lot of 80’s synths. Even before that, pop icons like Madonna changed how we receive music. She was one of the first artists to be really visual and fashionable in the way she presented her music. I fell in love with the creative art direction of all these 80’s icons and the songs are so fucking awesome.

The legendary movie ‘Blade Runner’ also inspired you a lot. How does that reflect in your music?

My dad loved ‘Blade Runner’, we have literally seen every version of the movie and I’ve gone to the fan nights. It came down to the fact that I was listening to a lot of 80’s pop music and I think I just randomly watched ‘Blade Runner’ one day. I was particularly looking for metallic textural sounds that I wanted to put in my music and I’ve heard all these sounds in the sound design of ‘Blade Runner’.

I immediately knew that these were the sounds I wanted, so I brought that as a reference into the studio when I was in the studio. With my last song “Level Mind Fuck”, the visuals were heavily inspired by ‘Blade Runner’ and there’s a song coming that has a direct quote from the movie in it.

You recently put out “I Make Boys Cry”. What should people know about the song before they listen to it?

The idea of the song came to me because I was feeling really guilty about breaking up with someone. By the way, you should never feel guilty about breaking up with someone. (laughs)

Originally, I was quite sad and it was meant to be a ballad. I actually never really write ballads, so I was in the studio and told them about my song idea. As soon as the idea came out of my mouth, I immediately told everyone “It’s going to be a dance tune!” The ballad idea got quickly thrown out of the window, so it became more of a “Dancing On My Own” type of song. You’re meant to feel a little bit sad and nostalgic, but also have a good time.

We’re slowly getting introduced to ‘Mukiverse’. How would you detail your own universe?

It’s a place where everyone is a badass bitch and everyone has main character energy. ‘Mukiverse’ is a place to me where all my delusional fantasies about my life come to “reality”, my alternative reality. Anyone who wants to be in the ‘Mukiverse’ just has to be a bad bitch, that’s it.

Your new project Car Crash Through Your Heart: Part 1 comes out next summer. Can you already spill some tea about it?

I’ve already spilled some tea… There’s a song coming that directly references ‘Blade Runner’. I can also already say that there will be a continuation of the visuals and you’ll get more of the storyline. The title Car Crash Through Your Heart: Part 1 is actually a lyric in an older song of mine called “I Know What I Like”, so that’s probably all the tea I can spill at the moment.
