Interview: Oscar Scheller Tells Us More About His Upcoming Album ‘Coming of Age’

In the ever-evolving landscape of indie and alternative music, few artists capture the essence of growth, self-discovery, and the poignant complexities of transitioning into adulthood quite like Oscar Scheller. With his much-anticipated album ‘Coming of Age’ on the horizon, Scheller invites us into his sonic world where introspection meets infectious melodies. ‘Coming of Age’ promises to be a raw and introspective exploration of life’s unpredictable twists and turns, and we can’t wait to hear Scheller’s unique perspective on this pivotal chapter in his career.

Your new single “Apricot” is part of your upcoming album Coming of Age. How is it to unveil the album bit by bit with these first singles?

It’s been a nice way of easing people into the project. I like it when you get introduced to a new universe like that. They feel like little trailers—before you watch the whole movie.

Coming of Age is your fourth album. Have you mastered a routine when crafting an album?

There is no real routine. I like to have concepts behind every album I make. I usually wait for that to materialize, which happens by just making lots of music and then seeing what reveals itself to me. If there’s a thread or recurring or overarching theme. The routine, I suppose, is just to be constantly making stuff, which I do naturally.

What makes this project different from everything you’ve done before?

This project feels different because I’m in such a different place as a human. I think the music hopefully reflects that. I went in intentionally wanting to build a very cinematic and atmospheric world. A world that you can get lost in, languish in, daydream, or reminisce. I think it’s warmer and more nostalgic than my previous albums.

You moved from London to Los Angeles. Do you already feel that this new environment impacts your music?

I think yes, although not in the way that I anticipated it. I thought I would make ‘sunny’ music. I’ve actually written some pretty dark stuff since being there. Los Angeles allows you a lot of space to reflect and muse on your life. Because it’s so isolated and insular, it provides a lot of reflection time.

What would it look like if you could imagine the perfect setting for a fan to listen to your upcoming album?

Driving anywhere, or lazing on the beach, lying next to your crush, walking through the city with no plan, staring out of a plane window, or at your bedroom ceiling.

Is there anything you can reveal about the album you haven’t told anyone before?

My favorite song on the album is called ‘CPR’, and I wrote that in 30 minutes. I felt so relieved afterward ’cause I really needed to say what I said.

You haven’t toured as Oscar Scheller in a long time. Is that something you’re planning with this album?

I would love to play some shows! I really enjoy performing—I used to do it a lot—it’s just finding the time with everything else I’ve got going on. But yes, I think there will be some shows. 🙂

Besides making music yourself, you’re one of the coolest producers in pop music at the moment. Do you approach songwriting for others differently compared to your own project?

Wow! Thank you! I think it’s such a different head space, but the main approach is just authenticity and going with what feels good. Nothing forced. Letting it happen is my M.O..

Ashnikko, Shygirl, PinkPantheress, Lily Allen, Rina Sawayama, Lil Nas X, … your list of production and songwriting credits is incredibly long. When is a collaboration successful for you?

A collaboration is successful to me when something is made that reflects the artist’s vision and sonic identity. Whether that enhances what’s already there or builds a new world for them. I only work on music that I like, and with people I can see myself having a good creative chemistry with, and later, a friendship and trust. Music-making is very emotional and intuitive for me, so a successful collaboration often means new friendships.

Is there an artist you haven’t worked with before that you would love to add to this impressive list?

Yes, there are a few at the moment I’m very excited about: John Glacier, kezia, Damazein, lil hero, Ojerime, Molly Payton, and 454.

Oscar Scheller’s new album ‘Coming of Age’ will be released on November 10th.
