INTERVIEW: Willem Dafoe about his personal style

In this interview, we look at the intersection of his film roles and his personal fashion choices, emphasizing how costumes influence his daily wardrobe and self-expression. Willem Dafoe tells us how fashion contributes to storytelling and personal identity, relevant to his extensive acting career and public persona.

As one of the most recognizable actors in the world, how does this impact your everyday fashion choices, and what is the one most important thing for you when deciding what to wear?

I tend not to agonize over what I wear. I’m often traveling and working so what I wear is somewhat practically dictated. The fact that I am an actor doesn’t really affect my clothing choice except that when I’m away working I tend to dress casually and am in costume being someone else most of the day.

How does your approach to selecting costumes for your roles influence your everyday fashion choices?

I’m struck that in movies often I am wearing clothes that I would never wear in life.

Can you recall a time when an outfit you wore in a film deeply influenced your personal style?

I think I learned how to feel comfortable in formal wear and business suits through wearing them in movies.

How do you see the intersection of fashion and identity in the characters you portray and in your own life?

People see you as the characters you play. If you do a variety of roles how they see you can run a big range of what kind of person they project onto you. I can often tell what the cinema taste is of the stranger who approaches me because of who I sense they think I am. In life, I tend to dress casually and comfortably.

What role do you think fashion plays in the storytelling process of a film?

Clothing is an important element that makes the character. For the actor in how the clothes feel and what imagination they trigger for them and for the public, it can suggest through association what kind of person they are by the identity association of the clothes.

How has your extensive career in the arts shaped your understanding and appreciation of fashion?

I don’t think of myself as thinking much about fashion but I do enjoy it in other people. And when I pick up a fashion magazine that’s laying around I find the photographs sometimes very beautiful, challenging and there’s a great opportunity to challenge what is possible to wear and how we can present ourselves to the world.

In what ways do you believe fashion can be a form of rebellion or conformity in society?

As I said above, like any art form it can challenge our perceptions of what is, what was, and what could be? Exploring non-traditional fashion choices can be liberating.

How do you balance comfort and style in your daily wardrobe, especially given your busy schedule?

I don’t think about style much. I do think about comfort and what I feel relaxed in. Like my taste in music, art, literature, I take from other people but also honor my intuitive sense of what I like, and find pleasing aesthetically.

How do you think your fashion choices reflect your personal beliefs and individuality?

If you have choice in what you wear, every piece of clothing you wear has a story and identifies to some degree where you have been, where you come from and where you wish to go.

How do you think fashion can help individuals in finding confidence to express themselves?

People dress with different intentions, to pass, to attract, to shock, to please, to joke, to drop out, to be accepted, to create an identity, to join a group – when they find the sweet spot of reaching their objective I think that makes them feel secure and confident.

Can you share a story about an outfit that made you feel particularly confident or empowered?

When I am alone in a tropical place- wearing flip flops, boxer shorts and a white tank t-shirt I think I am in heaven. Having said that, I am also partial to PRADA.

Zalando offers a diverse range of styles. How important is versatility in your wardrobe, and how do you achieve it?

I have to dress in different ways for my profession – so I never think about versatility. I will say I do lean towards a uniform and wearing the same thing often. I heard stories about Ingmar Bergman having a closet full of only black turtlenecks and black trousers – and hearing that I thought ‘that makes sense, he doesn’t fret and has more time to do his work because he doesn’t have to decide’. But at the same time, when I am in a photo shoot I wear things I would never wear in life but when I wear them in that context and try to make them (and me) come alive- I enjoy it so much.
