Interview: YOUR ANGEL Is Ready To Spread Her Wings On Upcoming Album ‘A Star in The Headlights’

Some music sounds like heaven on earth and brings a spring-lit atmosphere that can calm us down every time. These days, American singer YOUR ANGEL is high on our playlist. She released her debut album four years ago and, after a resurgence, she now returns with her big comeback album. ‘A Star in The Headlights’ is self-produced and makes her rise to pop heaven. We spoke to her following the new single “Good Girl” and the announcement of ‘A Star in The Headlights’ to be released on March 17.

YOUR ANGEL is such a fun moniker. What’s the story behind your alias?

Thank you! The meaning behind YOUR ANGEL is pretty on the head. I’ve always wanted to play the role in people’s lives, the same way that my favorite musicians have played a role in mine. I want my music to feel like a safe place to turn to.

If you could decide between going to heaven or hell, what would you choose and why?

I don’t know! I guess hell because the people would probably be more fun. But I hate the heat, so who’s to say?

We recently discovered you through your single “Misbehave”. What is the song about?

I wrote “Misbehave” right when I met my now boyfriend of three years. It’s a song about feeling like you’ve known someone your whole life right when you meet them and wanting to move really fast because you feel comfortable, and you’re so sure that they are the one.

You’ve released an album almost four years ago. How have you developed as an artist?

I’ve definitely come really far as a producer since my first album Pipe Dream came out in 2019. Pairing my advancement with production with really leaning into my love for pop music has been the most major development!

What’s the most important life lesson you’ve learned these past few years?

The past three years have been extremely formative for me, as I’m sure it was for most people. I got sober and have done a lot of work on myself. My biggest takeaway is that I cannot control the way other people perceive me. People are always going to take you the wrong way sometimes, and it’s honestly none of your business!

Your new album is called A Star in The Headlights. What was the sonic inspiration for the project?

I wanted it to feel super lush and cinematic. The idea at the forefront of my mind while making this album was writing songs that hit so close to home that they make you feel nostalgic even though you’ve never heard them before. And not nostalgic for an era or a specific time, but just the sensation of nostalgia, if that makes sense. All of my favorite songs made me feel that way the first time I heard them.

There’s an unwritten saying in the music industry that the second album is the most difficult one to make. Is that true based on your own experience?

Honestly no! (laughs) I think with this album I finally had the production chops to make the album I always wanted to make. Maybe if my first album was a huge success, I would have felt a different way.

What kind of artists have inspired the album?

The artists I was listening to at the time were: Ivy, Britney Spears, Dido, Beach House, Portishead, Timbaland, and George Clanton

We love the artwork. What does it reflect? What was the idea behind it?

Kate Biel, one of my favorite photographers right now, took the album art. We wanted to capture the essence of longing for something more.

How did you approach the visual aspect of A Star in The Headlights in general?

The visual world for YOUR ANGEL is super important to me. I put a lot of time and energy into the visuals for this project. I wanted the visuals for this album to feel like they existed in an alternate reality. Something that is super familiar to look at but just a little off-putting. Like it’s from this planet at first glance, but there’s just something a little bit off.

What are you planning in the weeks leading up to the big release?

Yes! My new single, “Good Girl”, is out now, and there are more visuals on the way too!

Where would you love to play with this album?

I think playing this album at Red Rocks in Colorado would be really magical!

Is there anything else you can reveal about the project you haven’t told anyone about until now?

There’s not much more to reveal, but I have been sitting on this album for two years, and I am so excited for it to finally be out!

YOUR ANGEL’s new single “Good Time” is out everywhere. You can already pre-save her upcoming album ‘A Star in The Headlights’.
