On Our Radar: Jorja Smith

This week’s artist to watch is UK-born Jorja Smith. We heard this 20-year-old singer sing and we can confirm her soulful and jazzy vocals carry you to another galaxy. One where Amy Winehouse, Mos Def, Lauren Hill and FKA Twigs are laughing and cheering to good music. This year, Smith has made it to the 4th place on the BBC Sound of 2017 list. That accomplishment assured her a golden seat at the table in the music scene. From there on, the world got to see a lot more of this young promising female musician.

Jorja Smith’s debut

The first time hearing her voice was an epiphany. And her mesmerizing never-heard-before voice instantly gave us goosebumps. Last year in March, she dropped her first musical baby titled Blue Lights. The video for Blue Lights is a clip of 3’39” directed by Drew Cox. Have a look at her first body of work.

What people don’t know about Jorja is that she self-wrote her debut single when she was 17. Meanwhile, the songwriter had already put out her EP Project 11, in November 2016. And today she can scrap “singing on a Drake song” from her bucket list and hear her song play on Insecure, HBO’s hit series. This rising artist has what it takes, she sings and raps on occasions. But when she does spit bars she does it with so much authenticity.

Teenage fantasy

Another self-written gem she shared on Youtube back in June was her video ‘Teenage Fantasy’. And ever since she has been on our radar. By the way, we’re just going to slide her music video into this article for you to watch. Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.
