Model And Mental Health Advocate Reece King On Inclusivity And Coming Out

Reece King is a model, dancer, mental health advocate, and one of the faces of the Zalando Walk a Mile collection. For this collection, Zalando collaborated with seven designers on an inclusive footwear collection, including Holzweiler, Filling Pieces, and MISBHV. Campaigns like this are crucial for King as inclusivity is the goal, “To be represented is really nice, but to be included feels a lot better.”

Why is it important for brands to not make gender-inclusive clothing but also size-inclusive pieces?

It’s important because we’re in a time where fashion shouldn’t be limited to the standard binary. Nothing should only belong to one type of person. Fashion plays such a huge part in lots of people’s lives. It’s not fair to have a big section of those people not be included because brands aren’t making clothes in diverse sizes. It’s the way forward, and brands need to take the initiative to make a broad range of sizes.

Do you struggle with clothes or brands that aren’t size-inclusive?

As a model, it benefits me that I have a smaller size because brands don’t extend their range. But I did struggle with finding menswear that fit me. So, I had to take my own initiative and find womenswear that was a comfortable medium of masculine and feminine because I’m also a dancer. I wear lots of heels when performing, but it’s a struggle to find heels in bigger sizes that aren’t super expensive.

What’s your favorite pair from the Zalando campaign?

I would have to say the black GCDS boots with the gold teeth, especially the knee-high version. My first thought when I saw them was: “Wow, they look very nice!”

How do you try to be inclusive in your work as a model?

Sometimes it is just important to question the brand or the client. I do this by initiating ideas, presenting them with alternatives, or involving others. It’s about bringing in people who I know should be represented and included, whether they’re trans, dark skin, non-binary, … I feel like I have had the privilege of bringing people to the table that I feel should be at that table. I’m hoping that the brands that I’m doing this with take note and decide to do a similar thing with or without me present.

How would you describe your style?

My style is very versatile. Some days it’s comfortable and casual, and other days, I’ll be in the mood to wear a look for no reason. It all depends on the day and how I’m feeling. Sometimes I get to work with stylists who are incredible and have resources to get clothes that I don’t have in my wardrobe.

A couple of years ago, you had a public coming out. What was that like?

It was incredibly scary. Looking back, it’s something I thought I would never do. I never thought I would even do it in my small day-to-day life to my family and friends. Later, when I started modeling, and my social media was growing, it felt like I was back in school. I once again received questions from people who wanted to figure me out and make me say whom I’m attracted to and how I identify. It was very traumatic, but I kind of flipped it. It was a very freeing and rewarding feeling, but at the time, it was incredibly scary.

What advice would you give to someone who hasn’t come out and is struggling with the same feelings as you were?

My advice would be to take your time and take baby steps. You can tell one close friend—maybe, one relative whom you trust or speak to an anonymous helpline. I feel like there’s a huge pressure to identify as a specific thing. Just take your time and do it when it feels wise. Even if it’s scary, you know within yourself when the time is right that you want to step on that podium and tell people who you are.
