Nike and Skepta Paying Homage to Paris with the Air Max 97/BW SK

English grime artist and rapper Skepta announced his second collaboration with Nike, after last years Air Max 97 SK as a dedication to his hometown London. This time, the capital of love and style, Paris, was his main inspiration. A fresh looking, clean shoe with the upper of an Air Max BW and the sole of a 97. An homage to red, white and blue. The kings colors.

Skepta tried to connect the culture of London and Morocco through a sneaker in his previous collaboration with Nike. This time he’s connecting the two style capitals of Europe, London and Paris. Next to both countries having the same colored flags, both being metropolises and a well-known history in fashion design, Paris is also known as one of the first international cities Skepta broke out.

Connecting his fandom

The two cities are connected by one train ride, although there is an ocean in between. And now they’re even connected by a shoe, a sneaker, a classic. For this model, Skepta put the sole of an Air Max 97 underneath an Air Max BW. He chose the BW, better known as the Big Window, as a reference to the Parisian and British hip-hop culture in the nineties. The shoe was originally a United States only. But they quickly became a top seller in Europe better known as the Air Max Classic. For Skepta it was clear he wanted to work with the most air possible: “When I was younger, Air Max was the shoe to flex in. The bigger your Air bubble, the cooler.”

Love lockdown

The shoes launched in Paris yesterday via the app SNKRS Stash. App users found hidden locks around the city that opened access to purchase the kicks. Skepta first used a lock motif on the cover of his recent EP Vicious. On the side of the shoe, a padlock as a sign of love is found. An homage to the padlocks in Paris, where you lock your love to a bridge. But also a sign of unconditional love to his fans, friends and family. For Skepta the padlocks, the multilayered references to love, music and romance and the freshness of the shoe are a symbol of Parisian and London’s culture.

The full release will take place on May 19th in Paris. Pigalle, Broken Arm, Starcow, Shinzo, Acte 2, SNS and Footpatrol will be the stores selling the kicks. Afterwards, other European fans of Skepta and Nike will get the chance to buy a pair through the SNKRS app and some selected retailers such as Patta, Très Bien and Concepts.
