On Our Radar 2021: Fascinating Wunderkind Gala

We’ve already met many upcoming artists but none of them came even close to the upcoming Belgian singer Gala. Whenever the 15-year-old enters a room, she radiates an indescribable and unique energy. As we’ve invited her to ‘La Nouvelle Maison’, a monument just outside Brussels, to shoot with us, we were delighted to get to know this young wunderkind. As the second last act, she joins our stellar line up of ‘On Our Radar 2021‘.

Gala grew up in a creative household. Her dad is a painter, and former musician and has a workshop next-door to her bedroom, which she can use as well. “I love to paint and draw. Whenever I can, I pick something up and just try to make something.”

Creativity is key

Gala has a massive year behind her as she’s the most recent winner of The Voice Kids in Flanders and got immediately signed by Universal Music. Right after her victory, she released her first single “Contagious”, and there’s a lot more to come. “We’re currently making demos, and I want to try out as many genres as possible because I’m still looking for the music I’d like to make,” she says, adding that she already has some preferences.

If there’s something Gala doesn’t want, it’s that everything rushes too fast. The first single was made within a deadline of two weeks, but she’ll be taking time before releasing something next. “I don’t like to work under pressure, and I try to focus on making real art.” Her determination to make something memorable and create an experience just shows how much she cares about her craft. She doesn’t want to be a mainstream artist but wants to tell her story from her perspective. Her creativity and integrity really surprised us, and we’re sure that this young singer will make it far!

To give our ‘On Our Radar’ artists the opportunity to present themselves in their own way, we asked them to fill in our little slam book. Here’s what Gala said:

When someone asks me who I am, I reply:

I am Gala.

Describe your music in a few words:

My thoughts.

Last release of 2020?

“Contagious” in September. Because of covid-19, we had to write “Contagious” with Michelle Leonard via Zoom. Online. The title of the song fits very well in this situation ehehehehe. It was my first writing session I ever had, and I wanted to point out a problem that I saw some friends going through that I hate. The impact that body shaming can have on someone. It is insane. Do you know how bad you can make someone feel by doing that? I never knew until I actually saw someone suffering from it. Just be nice, man. AND HEALTHY 🙂

First release of 2021?

I’m not sure yet, but it will probably be around March or April. I like to take my time and be cool. No stress. I hate stress.

Be underrated or become overrated?

I think I would rather be underrated. I think it is because I like a lot of artists that are considered underrated. I don’t really know, though.

Artists that inspire me?

A lot of artists inspire me. It can go from the freedom they express in their art to the textures or sounds they use in music or art in general. Björk, Chopin, Radiohead, Rachmaninoff, Arca, Chet Baker, David Bowie, Massive attack, … lots of people.

People often compare me to?

Amy Winehouse and Billie Eilish. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you so much. That means A LOT

Music videos or live shows?

Honestly, I love both. Being on stage singing makes me feel a certain way, and I cannot explain it, just like being in a studio writing songs. It makes me the happiest person in the world. Music videos complete the message you want to tell (for me, though). I think they are very important. I always visualize my music: I draw what I hear or want to hear.

What I want to learn in 2021?

I want to improve my piano skills and learn classical pieces, music-writing and guitar. I also want to learn how to play chess and how to work with a sewing machine and maybeeeeeeee start figure skating.

Who I hope to meet in 2021?

I want to meet a lot of people. Maybe Griezmann or Mariko Mori. That would be nice. The list would be a little bit too long, I think.

My personal goals for 2021?

I want to make more music and do better at school hahaha.

Another artist to watch in 2021?

What people can expect from me in 2021?

More music 😉 and more clothes hihihi.

2021 will be my year because …

I’ll work with a lot of people, learn a lot, and release more musicccc.

What advice do you want to give yourself for the next year?

Do what you want to do. Try. NO boundaries.
