On Our Radar: Afghan-Dutch Singer and Producer Ferdous Releases Debut Mixtape ‘Cool Party’

As true night owls, we are often drawn to dark, murky electronic music. With his debut mixtape, ‘Cool Party’, Afghan-Dutch Ferdous delivers the ideal soundtrack for a nighttime adventure. The euphoric tracks invite us to dance to songs that accompany our walk home while his project guides us through the most diverse situations we could experience at night. So we are happy to introduce him in our series ‘On Our Radar‘ with an interview.

Hooray, your first full-length project Cool Party is out! What are the key elements for a literal ‘cool party’ for you?

Thank you. I’d want people in a room together and feel great, safe, and in harmony with each other. No music snobbism allowed, or you’ll get kicked out immediately. There’d be an MC who interrupts the party every now and then screaming, “who here knows that alcohol is actually a hard drug?” while everyone takes an awkward sip of their drink, including me. Dance battles are only allowed if the entire room is absolutely silent with no music.

What’s your funniest party story so far?

This one time, when I was DJing at a party in Amsterdam, I had just finished my set and hung out behind the DJ booth on stage afterward. Suddenly I saw Martin Solveig walking up on the stage as well, and I remember he tweeted a couple of times about my previous project Klyne, so I thought, “Hey, I should say hi”. I walked up to him without having any idea what to say. I think, eventually, I mumbled some random inaudible words to him with incredibly loud music in the background. He looked sympathetic but very confused at me and, eventually, walked away. I felt so stupid. (laughs)

The project gives us an introspective perspective on your music. Which emotions were mostly the starting point of the songs?

I usually try to start from a point of feeling serene, after which all kinds of emotions can surface that result in certain sounds/words. I think the songs in this project mostly stemmed from having conflicting thoughts and feelings and ultimately trying to live with that inner ambiguity.

You live in Amsterdam but have roots in Afghanistan. How does your heritage inspire your music?

I think my heritage gives me a sense of home and grounding, and it’s important for me to feel that in order to be able to create anything. For the biggest part of my life, I wasn’t really aware of what my Afghan heritage meant to me, but it actually defines most of what I do and, especially, my music.

We hear you shift through different genres and play with textures. How did you approach the production of Cool Party?

It’s very liberating to let go of any notion of “being consistent”. I definitely wanted to manifest that in Cool Party. The only thing I knew beforehand was this project was going to be hip-hop focussed but also collaged with all kinds of different sounds. That was my approach to the production in general.

You’ve previously released music as part of the electronic pop duo Klyne. Did that help you with starting your solo project?

Funnily enough, putting Klyne on hold actually enabled me to start my new solo project. I’ve always loved creating music with Klyne, but it had reached a point where it took over my life, health, and well-being everything. After we put Klyne on hold, I was able to go back to a point where (creating) music is just a natural outlet for me—only a form of self-expression and nothing else.

For the visuals, you collaborated with Niko Zelenik. How did the collaboration start?

I found Niko on Instagram and was absolutely blown away by the quality, authenticity, and playfulness of his work. I immediately became obsessed with his stuff, so I reached out to ask if he wanted to work with me on my upcoming project, and luckily enough, he was down to collaborate. We weren’t even able to meet up IRL because he’s based in Slovenia, and he was busy with his studies at the time, but nevertheless, the entire process of working with him went so smoothly. I feel blessed to have been able to work with him on this project.

What do the visuals portray for you?

Personally, with each song, I tried to paint a certain world or ambiance, and I feel like Niko has bridged this perfectly into a visual world, and he also made it something entirely of its own. Any abstract thoughts or colors I saw with the music, I think Niko cemented in a very clear way within his own world and interpretation. I’ve always wanted to do a complete audiovisual project like this, so I’m beyond happy it actually came to life.

What did the mood board for the artwork look like?

It was 3D focussed, and a lot of it was actually Niko’s previous artworks.

Is there a specific environment that you imagine as the perfect setting to listen to your music?

The ideal setting for listening to my music is while being in a dream-like state—doesn’t matter where exactly. Otherwise, it’s floating between the stars in space! Call Jeff Bezos!

How are you looking at your future as an artist? What do you want to achieve this year?

I’ve worked up to this project for so long it’s hard for me to imagine what’s next, to be honest. I’ll always want to remain free in doing what I do, especially in music. I can’t envision any future outside of that. Other than that, I don’t really want to think ahead too much. I’m just gonna enjoy the shit out of this release.

Is there anything you haven’t told anyone about Cool Party yet that you’d like to share with us?

Cool Party ends on a downer because it’s supposed to represent the feeling of a hangover the morning after.

‘Cool Party’ is out now on all platforms, and be sure to follow Ferdous on Instagram.
