On Our Radar: Australian Soundcloud Discovery Marceline Debuts With Her EP ‘Cast Away’

The first steps of an artist are often still timid and exploratory, but at the same time give a clear direction of what the artist is capable of. That is why we launched our series ‘On Our Radar‘ in which we put emerging acts in the spotlight. Today, we introduce Australian singer Marceline, who released her debut single “Don’t Take It Personally” in January, and today delivers two tracks that make up her first EP ‘Cast Away’. So we spoke to the young talent who was discovered by her label on SoundCloud and is now taking the music world by storm.

How would you introduce yourself in your own words to someone who isn’t familiar with who you are?

My name is Marceline, and I create music in a diverse range of styles, including hyperpop, alternative rock, electronic, and balladry, among others. Marceline is more than just a stage name; it’s my alter ego. My ultimate objective is to inspire others to trust and love themselves unconditionally. Although I am new to the music culture and scene, I have been fortunate enough to play live at a few events in Melbourne/Naarm. I see my music as a personal diary that enables me to express my emotions without fear of judgment. Writing has always been a safe haven for me since childhood. I hope that my music resonates with listeners and brings them comfort.

What kind of artists did you grow up with?

As a young music enthusiast, I was heavily influenced by a diverse range of talented artists, such as Amy Winehouse, Daft Punk, Avril Lavigne, Lily Allen, Calvin Harris, Paramore, Metro Station, Nicki Minaj, Usher, 2Pac, Yuna, Justin Bieber, Kid Cudi, and Kanye West—just to name a few.

As I entered my early teens, my taste evolved, and I found myself drawn to the sounds of Lil Peep, Kehlani, Tyler the Creator, Suicide Boys, Jaden Smith, Clairo, Joji, Danger Incorporated, Daniel Caesar, Frank Ocean, Jorja Smith, Brockhampton, Kiana Ledé, Sabrina Claudio, and many others. These musical geniuses have had a profound impact on my personal style and have inspired me to pursue my passion for music with unwavering determination.

You’ve recently released your debut single “Don’t Take It Personally“. Why did you pick this song as your debut?

Starting with a song that is close and dear to my heart has been a long-time desire of mine. It’s a priority for me to share with others that experiencing low periods in life is perfectly okay and the profound impact it can have on someone. “DTIP” is a raw, vulnerable, and honest expression of my emotions. It captures the raw essence of my mind during a time of struggle and pain. I know that there are people out there who have felt the same way, and I want them to know they’re not alone. It’s a song that I hope many will appreciate and relate to, as it represents a true and authentic part of my soul.

The song will be featured on your first EP. What do you want to showcase on the project?

There isn’t much to say other than the fact that I want to showcase vulnerability, uncertainty about things in my life, and the fears that have taken over my mind. The hidden meanings within each song, the cryptic messages, and the story they tell are what I aim to express.

The EP is called Cast Away. Do you find it difficult to find your spot in the music industry?

I sometimes struggle to find a sense of belonging, perhaps due to my personal perspective. However, being part of the music industry has exposed me to an array of fascinating and exceptional individuals, and I am grateful for the opportunity. While it can be emotionally taxing at times, I believe that everything in life has its balance. Despite being a part of this world, I still feel like an outsider. Nonetheless, I have had the privilege of meeting some incredibly kind-hearted individuals who have made me feel appreciated and supported. I acknowledge that without their help, I would not be where I am today. Although it has been a bit overwhelming for me as a newcomer, I am eager to connect and engage with others in the industry.

What’s your personal fave on the EP? What is that song about?

Out of all the songs, “Who are you?” is the one that holds a special place in my heart. It represents the end of a tumultuous period in my life where I was with someone who had ulterior motives, causing me to lose myself in the process. Going through heartbreak is never easy, but being manipulated, disrespected, and taken for granted, on top of it all, made the experience even more excruciating. However, the process of creating this song was liberating and empowering. Putting all the pieces together and hearing the final product was incredibly satisfying, making all the pain and struggles almost worthwhile.

What themes have inspired the lyrics the most?

Oh boy—A sense of heartache, self-loathing, and instability were all consuming me. The pain was stemming from a place of deep hurt and the constant feeling of being misunderstood by those around me. For a long time, I was lost within myself, struggling to understand who I really was. My mind was always dwelling on the past, tearing apart every mistake I made.

A debut is always a first taste of everything that’s coming up next. What do you hope to achieve with this first project?

I hope to grab the attention of people who don’t know their own place in the world but are slowly figuring it out. I trust that the right people will listen to my music and grow. All I ever need is support. I’m not expecting anything too far within my reach but instead a loving and empathetic community.

Are there any other artists we should keep an eye on?

Keep your eyes peeled for Min1skt, Cookii, FreshHex, and Stainisdead. Each of them has a unique and unparalleled style, offering a song to fit any mood you may be in. Feeling isolated and misunderstood, on the verge of a breakdown, but also with a god complex? Look no further than Min1skt. Ready to get silly, scream at the top of your lungs, and dance all night with your friends? Cookii is your go-to. Want to get absolutely smashed, hype yourself up, and party all night long? FreshHex has got your back. And if you want to get deep into your feelings, think about your life, and let out some raw emotions, then Stainisdead is the perfect choice for you.
