On Our Radar: Lynks Is a Cat-Like Queer Icon

Lynks has always triggered our attention with their remarkable looks, but Bristol’s masked phenomenon also has a very refreshing musical sound. With their uncompromised and heavy-hitting tracks, they always turn every party into a rave and gave punk a new definition. We had a chat with the trailblazer, whose new trilogy ‘MEN’ will take them on a headline tour through the UK and a couple of dates in Europe with Metronomy.

What does Lynks represent summarized in a couple of sentences?

Pure gay chaos and total sweaty escapism.

You worked on a new trilogy of singles. How did you approach the songwriting and production?

This year I’ve just been thinking a lot about men, but not in a fun way. Like what does it mean to be a man, what is a man, what is a good man etc? So I didn’t even go into the project hoping to make three singles about men. I just kind of happened to make three songs on the theme and was like, “Great! That’s an EP then.” Happy days.

You decided to name the project MEN, what’s the general mood of the music?

Generally pissed off. But dancing at the same time.

Your signature looks include a face mask. How did you come up with that?

The real story: I used to do a full face of makeup, but I would always sweat it off by the end of a 45-minute set. So one time I just wore a full mask and was like: “This is a dream. I’m never going back.” It totally makes you lose any and all inhibitions. Plus, it looks hot.

The new single “Hey Joe (Relax)” is another banger. Can you tell us a little bit more about the meaning of the track?

This song is about when you bring a guy you’re dating to meet your friends for the first time and realize he’s a total douchebag. Bad feeling. I felt I needed to channel it into some “art” or whatever and ended up with a big fat bop.

The colorful music video plays with stereotypes. What’s the deeper meaning of the visual? What story do you want to bring across?

With the video, I just really honed into the “Relax” part of the chorus. I was thinking about self-care and taking that to an extreme, very unreeling place. Exposing the freakiness of capitalist culture trying to exploit mindfulness and stuff.

You’re definitely not a shy performer and artist. What gives you the confidence to be your true authentic self? What would your advice be to people that struggle with being themselves?

I’d honestly recommend anyone to put a mask on and go on stage. Any anxieties I might normally have kind of melt away when no one knows who the fuck I am. It’s great. And that confidence really starts to feed into your everyday life, too, I’ve found.

What do you have up your sleeve for the next few months? Is there any secret you already want to reveal?

Tour, tour, tour baby!! Get me on that bus; I’m ready.
