Y’all probably know Zoë Kravitz, the oh so beautiful daughter of Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonnet. She’s a model and an actress (Divergent, X-Men: First Class, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), but what you might not know is that she’s in a band. If I had to describe LOLAWOLF’s sound in one word it would be: rebellious. Don’t ask me how that’s a music genre, but you’ll understand when you hear it.
The name LOLAWOLF comes from the names of Zoë’s little half-siblings, Lola and Nakoa-Wolf Momoa. For the band Zoë Kravitz teams up with drummer/producer James Giannopoulos. The two met in Brooklyn, where they both live. They don’t do fancy studios, they just mess around and record everything at home or in hotels. They also only use analog instruments.
Their first single was Wanna Have Fun, a very mesmerizing track. “Tired of everyone doing it right“, Kravitz sings. It perfectly illustrates the message that almost every LOLAWOLF song brings: dare to colour outside the lines.
EP’s and albums
LOLAWOLF wrote and recorded their first EP when Zoë was having a tough time in 2014. She was shooting The Road Within, a film where she played anorexic. The band was a distraction from her negative vibes, it’s what kept her sane.
8 months after that they recorded their album Calm Down.
It is very bold and has an extremely multi-layered soundscape. My all time favorite song is undoubtably What Love Is. The lyrics are very appealing and the music video – which was recorded in one tape – is intriguing in its simplicity.
In 2015 they released a second EP, the 5-tracked Every Fucking Day. It contains morphed voices and glitched sounds. It’s as eclectic as Zoë Kravitz’ taste in fashion – and trust me, she has a funky garderobe.
Zoë Kravitz x Miley Cyrus
Zoë Kravitz and Miley Cyrus regularly team up as friends, but also as musicians. LOLAWOLF opened up for Miley Cyrus on the Australian leg of her Bangerz tour. But Kravitz has done more impressive openings, she was also the support act of Lily Allen, Azealia Banks and Warpaint.
But… Back to Miley Cyrus. In LOLAWOLF’s music video for Bitch, Miley and Zoë hang out together in a hotel. Miley also features on Kravitz’ latest track Teardrop.
I’m curious what LOLAWOLF’s future will bring. Apparently they’re currently working on a new album.
CAN’T WAIT. I’m hoping for more collaborations!
