Our Favorite Sustainable Collections of the Season

The environment is a topic that’s always high on our agenda. Since we’re a fashion magazine, we’re well aware of the fact that clothing indeed is a polluting industry. Which is one of the reasons why we always choose to write about creativity, rather than mass consumption. We’re not even close to a sustainable fashion business, but more and more brands and designers are making a change. Here’s a list of our favorites this season:

Weekday 100% Recycled Denim Collection

Together with Recover©, Weekday launches a collection made from 100% recycled fabrics. The process of producing the fabric starts with post-industrial cotton waste being collected and color separated, so no recoloring is needed. The cotton is then shredded into fibers and blended with recycled polyester, made from recycled PET bottles. Using two different fabrics, the limited edition collection consists of a light knitted cotton for jersey and a heavy woven cotton for denim. The low impact textiles save on energy, CO2, chemicals and water. And help save PET bottles from ending up in landfills or oceans.

The collection itself is a combination of workwear inspired denim looks and sleepwear, all in neutral tones such as beige, brown, light yellow and red. It’s inspired by the idea of owning your choices; the future is something to be achieved and not something to be taken for granted.

Available from the 21st of March in stores and on the webshop

Favorite SS19 sustainable collections

Mara Hoffman

Designer Mara Hoffman founded her label in 2000 after graduating from Parsons School of Design in New York. In 2015 she decided to implement a more responsible practice. The brand now focusses on using sustainable materials and means for shipping, packaging and branding.

Her SS19 collection coul be best described as a gathering of beautiful summer essentials. Fluid fabrics, feminine cuts and a beautiful neutral color palette. On top of that, she also focuses on women with different body types. A selection of her collection is available from size XS to triple XL.

Stella McCartney

Obviously Stella McCartney had to be on our list. She’s the epitome of how luxury and design go hand in hand with sustainability. From the early ’90s she’s been a pioneer in using alternative materials and cutting-edge technologies.

The SS19 collection was the first one that came out after she bought back Kering’s stake in her business. After seventeen years she can call herself fully independent again. This didn’t translate itself in a break with the past but rather a focus on what she does best: designing a collection for cool, modern women and men.

Rombaut

As you could read in our article from last week, we’re big fans of the vegan footwear collection from Rombaut. All materials used in his designs are sustainably engineered, no toxic or animal-derived substances are involved. The brand develops plant-based materials instead and is determined to protect bio-diversity in our environment.

Recode

The Korean brand Recode is all about up-cycling. All the items in the collection have their own story. Instead of waste, a new culture of value is created. Old fabrics, but also industrial garments such as seat covers and airbags are used to create new designs. The blouse in the picture, for example, is created out of the interlinings of a men’s jacket.
