Paris Just Enhanced Its Role as Fashion Capital of the World Thanks to Gucci

When talking diversity in the fashion industry, fashion weeks are mostly forgotten. Because if we have to be completely honest, there’s only one city that truly matters amongst the big four: Paris. Last night it was revealed that Gucci is planning to leave Milan for a season. The Italian luxury label, led by artistic director Alessandro Michele, will present its Spring 2019 runway show in The City of Lights and love.

An ongoing love affair

Our first thought, when hearing the news, was: why??? In our minds Gucci is as much as Prada and Versace linked to Milan Fashion Week. According to official sources the move is part of the ongoing love affair with “all things French”. The Pre-Fall 2018 campaign was shot in Paris and its Cruise 2019 show will be held in the city of Arles.

It’s well-known that Alessandro Michele has an affinity for the French culture. You’d only have to take a look at his Instagram to figure that out. Also, Guccio Gucci once left his hometown Florence to start a career in the hotel business in Paris. It obviously stayed with flirting, otherwise Gucci would have never seen the daylight.

Stirred and shaken

After a long tradition of quite classic fashion weeks, these past few seasons, changes have been made. The team behind Vetements has been following their gut feeling rather than the traditions. There was the ‘See-Now-Buy-Now’ hype. Alexander Wang announced earlier this year that he’s moving his shows to a June/December schedule.

Stirring things up has become the newest trend in order to gain attention. With so much (too much?) going on in the fashion business, it requires to constantly be on top of your game. Otherwise, you might easily be forgotten. Alessandro Michele’s first collections at Gucci were received with a round of applause. All of a sudden, literally everyone was wearing the brand again. But people easily get tired of everything nowadays because of the overload. Instead of just being the genius he is, Alessandro Michele and his team constantly have to reinvent what they do for Gucci, both creatively and strategically. By moving the show to Paris for a season, press and buyers’ interest will be piqued. Which will hopefully result in extra sales because that’s where it’s in the end all about.

Fashion Week diversity

With Gucci moving to Paris, it more and more feels like this is the only fashion week that truly matters. For now Calvin Klein, Prada, Versace and Burberry haven’t announced any big plans. But if they do, a monopoly is set.
