Patrick Mason: “There’s No Gatekeeping With Techno”

Berlin-based American Patrick Mason is someone who almost doesn’t need an introduction anymore. He started with live-streaming DJ sets from his living room during COVID and quickly became a full-time artist performing multiple gigs a week in cities all over Europe. So scroll down to read our inspiring talk with Patrick Mason about techno, gatekeeping in the industry, new music, and the Zalando x Filling Pieces campaign he stars in.

Hi Patrick, nice to meet you! How are you? Where are you right now?

I am actually at home, one of my safe spaces. I’ve been on tour a lot, and this is my safe haven.

I’ve been following you for a while. I remember the livestreams you did on Instagram during the COVID lockdowns. It has been thrilling to see you grow from the livestreams to touring and doing multiple gigs every weekend. How does this evolution feel for you?

It’s still a bit unreal, to be honest. Because I started with the livestreams at home. I had the first opportunity to play for HÖR in 2020. I never expected it to take off this quickly. As soon as the COVID regulations were lifted, it went from zero to one thousand in literally a year. If I take a little recap and review what happened last year… it’s unreal. I mean, for a DJ, not doing this professionally for too long already and then starting my career during a pandemic, to getting gigs like playing at Awakenings, Circo Loco, and more … all within one year. There are DJs out there who have been doing it for a decade and are dying to play shows like this. I am so, so grateful, and I don’t take anything for granted. Right now, I’m just trying to make the best out of the situation that I’m in, and I’m trying to pull as many people as possible up with me. I mean it’s very community-driven, what I do.

Is there a specific message that you try to bring across throughout your work?

There’s this one message that I’m trying to bring across. Especially thinking about the queer community and how we interact with each other. We have to realize that trans people are always fighting at the forefront of every fight. They have been doing the work from day one, and they are the ones that are still struggling the hardest. I would wish for our community to appreciate and recognize all trans people way more and give them the seat that they deserve. They deserve the fucking table! I’m really rooting for them, and I wish for our queer allies to support them more. We’re all fighting the same fight, and it’s very important.

For me, going forward, I’m getting to a point where I have the recognition, and I’m getting the space to express myself. I sometimes get the opportunities to create lineups—events—and, for that, I specifically have trans people on the forefront. I give them the space to show their art. And it doesn’t have to be DJs necessarily. There are some amazing dancers out there or artists who work in visuals, AI, CGI … Clubbing, right now, is so much more than just the DJ. I think we should use all the technology that we have to create an unforgettable showcase of artistry on so many different levels.

How would you describe your style of DJing?

My style of DJing … It’s deep, it’s dirty, and it’s fierce. I don’t follow rules; I break rules. Especially in techno. Techno is a form of expression. Techno stands for evolution. Techno stands for revolution. Techno stands for progress. Techno stands for rhythm, you know? And all of that I embody. There’s no gatekeeping with techno. Saying techno has to be a certain way is completely wrong. That was never the intention of techno. Techno was created out of a fucking basement or garage somewhere in Detroit by a black dude. Techno is how you perceive yourself in a confined space through sound, through rhythm, and your emotions just let loose.

That’s what it is about, on a very technical electronic level basis. And I’m taking it to the next level. I take what I’ve learned and fuck that shit up.

Even though you say that techno has no rules, and I completely agree, there are a lot of techno purists who are really strict about what techno means …

But what is a techno purist? Because techno has no A or B. There are so many different subgenres in techno. It’s an intersection of house music. It has the same origin. Techno purists, or at least most of the ones I had the privilege of arguing with—first of all—they are all in their 50s or older, white, straight, and they all have the feeling that they have some sort of gatekeeping privilege over techno. All while techno never really originated from them in the first place. So what is a techno purist? A techno purist, for me, is very old school but in a very twisted way.

There needs to be room for everyone. I hate this gatekeeping bullshit. Everybody should have their own space. Everybody should collaborate with each other in the best way possible and make something beautiful in sound. Because that’s what it is about: unity and community. Why should we kick each other out? Time’s hard enough out there, trust me, we don’t need extra bullshit on top of that.

How would you describe yourself? More as a DJ or rather as a performer?

I’m not a performer because a performer is doing something on top of things. I’m also not just a DJ; I’m an artist. I DJ live; let’s make that very fucking clear. Because a lot of people think it’s all pre-recorded, but no bitch, it’s all live. On top of that, I’m dancing. Not only behind the decks, but I have a breakdown part where I go on stage and do the fucking voguing bullshit and all that. And I sing live on top of my set. So these are three things that an artist or pop star on a huge ass stage does as well. For me, this is pure artistry.

You recently posted some teasers of original music coming. Can you tell me anything more about that?

Yes, we’ve been working for almost a year and a half now. It’s actually two projects. One project is more electronic music-driven, very club-orientated, which will hopefully be released in the first half of this year. It’s gonna be something very exciting. It’s very me. If you’ve been following me for a while and you hear it, you will say, “of course, it makes so much sense”.

For the other project, I’m trying to establish myself a bit more as a singer in neo R&B and neo soul. There are also some hip-hop references. But let’s see. I’m working with several producers who are completely spread out over the world from LA to London and Berlin. So it’s not that easy to communicate if you’re not in the studio physically. But a debut album will be following in the next two years.

I’m also working on collaborations with Hector Oaks. There’s gonna be a track with me singing on it coming out in the next month already, I think. We produced the track together, and it’s gonna be a techno anthem. That’s all I’m gonna say. (laughs) It’s going to be fucking epic.

Talking about how people dress at parties … Fashion and music often go together. How do these disciplines go together in your universe?

Omg. For me personally, as I am a very eccentric character—even before the music—I was always dressing for the gods. This is part of my DNA. It’s how I live. Fashion is a part of myself; it’s an extension. The way that I dress is a direct reflection of my mood and what I want to communicate. Because fashion is a form of communication. So for me, music and fashion go hand in hand. Both things are a way to transmit a feeling. They are both basically just enhancing each other.

For me—not only being behind the decks—but also putting on a performance and going on to the DJ booths, creating a bigger full-on extravaganza, and pulling off looks are part of the entire vibe. I’m now also working on expanding that into a full-on showcase. So, if you come to a show of mine, it’s not just music but also a full-on fashion extravaganza. I want runways and catwalks and to be involved with fashion houses … I have ideas that can go in so many different ways! For me, fashion is always a way to enhance the musical and sonic experience that you see at the club. It’s a no-brainer for me!

How does this translate to you doing the campaign for Zalando and Filling Pieces?

Filling Pieces has been on my radar for a long while. It’s created from a POC background, from the culture, and for the culture. So from the start, their brand DNA is what I am looking for in a brand: inclusivity, body positivity, and, of course, tailoring.

Zalando made quite an impressive evolvement over the years. Funny enough, I even worked for Zalando seven or eight years ago when I was an art director. Everyone who lives in Berlin and works in fashion somehow has worked with Zalando at some point in their career. I always had a good friendly relationship with them. When they offered me to work on the campaign, I was hesitant, at first, but when I saw the cast, it was a done deal!

Speaking about the cast … SEVDALIZA!

Yes! I met her briefly a few times before at events or fashion weeks and stuff. But the first time we actually spoke and hung out was at this shoot. We had a complete blast! We shared some really cool moments and also some insider things that are happening.

I’m now also in conversation to sign with the same artist agency that she is signed with. So if that happens, we would probably interact and collaborate on way more things. We could go to fashion weeks together and stay in the same hotels and do all kinds of mischief. I’m telling you!

But also musically. It could definitely work out! We had a little talk about it, but it would be something on my bucket list to happen this year. Her energy, especially on stage, I mean, come on! I’m pretty sure that could be a really nice finale for the year 2023, you know … Let’s see! (laughs)
