Premiere: Patches Introduces New Chapter With a Sensual Cover of Sade’s ‘Pearls’

A glow of sensuality overwhelms us every time we listen to the music of the Belgian answer to the British Sade. Patches is the project of Lotte Lauwers and originated during her now-completed studies, but the project lives on. Indeed, she is currently putting the finishing touches on her debut album. Having only been on stage this year and not releasing any music, she is now sweetening the wait with a cover of Sade’s beautiful “Pearls”. We introduce the exclusive premiere and asked her some questions about the future.

This year, unfortunately, we didn’t get any new music from you. How was this year for you?

Interesting on several levels. Perhaps one of the most challenging years so far. My ambition, on the other hand, also grew, and I know better and better what I do and don’t want to do in this life. Writing your debut album only happens once, which also made last year very special.

In 2021, you released your second EP, Silver Foxes. How do you look back at that release?

With pride. For me, the second EP felt like a logical turn of events, songs that needed to be written. Musically, Aram Santy—my producer and co-writer—and I were in a good flow. I was able to translate the first cracks in my naivety into something good.

You worked on your debut album this year. How is that process going?

Intense but fascinating. About a year ago, the album’s theme started taking shape in my head. When life gets hard, I tend to wander off to other times. To other fantasy worlds, alternative worlds where I would have done different things differently… Escapism in an extreme form. All my life, I have been “suffering” from this, and lately, it has only become more so. For instance, at one point, I lost myself in the city of Venice. A city that in itself shivers with melancholy and nostalgia. The grandiosity of the city during the heyday of ‘the Queen of the Adriatic’ is in stark contrast to ‘the sinking city’ of today. How hard I wished I had known that city back then. But see, back then all that glamour also applied but to a small majority, which would not have made life better for me back then. And I’m starting to wander again… These themes, why I experience certain desires and feelings, are addressed in the album. With Venice on a beautifully decorated throne as a starting point.

In your music, you embrace sensuality. Has that always been in you?

Yes. Life is more enjoyable living when I feel good about my sensuality and embrace it fully. I immediately notice that when I fail to listen to this…, I feel like I start to solidify just like a candle. Is that comparison correct? I think so. (laughs)

For the visual aspect, you often collaborate with Leen Hoogmartens. How did your collaboration start?

I thought Leen was really cool. I was a fan of her work and what she exuded as a person too. Also a bit nervous to ask her for a first shoot. It turned out that she also had some nerves. It also turned out that we actually match very well, and it turned out that she has the gift of being able to keep translating Patches into images.

Why are you such a good match?

As mentioned above, Leen understands a lot of what I want to say and how I want to convey it. I also find her refreshingly herself in such a strong way that I really look up to.

To shorten the wait for new music, you are now releasing a cover of Sade’s song “Pearls”. What connects you to Sade so much? Why is she such a big inspiration for you?

So many things: her timelessness, she remains impervious to trends, the songs! Such strong narrative songs. For me, Sade can be immortalized in a beautiful piece of marble and end up in the Louvre!

Why did you choose this song specifically?

I first got to know the live version of Sade and found it breathtakingly beautiful, sad, and honest. Bringing this song was a nice challenge to tell a story that is not mine, trying to recognize and understand those emotions.

How are you looking at next year?

A mix of a lot of excitement and partly healthy stress!

When can we expect another release from you?

February 2023.
