Review: The Fundamentals of Caring

Yesterday Netflix launched its latest movie entitled The Fundamentals of Caring, starring Paul Rudd, Craig Roberts and Selena Gomez. With a title like that and the most famous girl on Instagram playing a supporting role it wasn’t hard to catch our attention.

The story starts with Ben, a depressed 45-year-old writer who’s looking for a job to add some meaning to his life. After a 28-hour caregiver course he ends up working for teenager Trevor who’s suffering a disease called muscular dystrophy. A wheelchair-bound, mostly paralyzed prankster with a sarcastic touch as his first client isn’t exactly an easy job. But for some reason, through their miserie, they seem to understand one another and share a common sense of humor.

Being fed up with staying around the house and watching TV, Ben suggest that they go visit some places. However, Trevor is in a twist concerning this idea since he’s also suffering anxiety attacks. The only time he left the house for a long time was when they had to move to the States. After a fight about Ben’s past that got a little out of hand they ultimately decide to go on a road trip. And that’s where the adventures begin…

The Fundamental Actors

The two main actors in The Fundamentals of Caring are Paul Rudd and Craig Roberts who play respectively Ben and Trevor. If the first name doesn’t ring a bell, Rudd used to play Mike Hannigan in Friends for about 18 episodes. Besides that his filmography is full of crap we better don’t even remember in the first place. We weren’t expecting very much of him but he actually surprised us this time. The part as a sensitive, depressed man looking for a meaning in his life seemed to be written all over him.

We had honestly never heard of Craig Roberts but according to IMDb he has acted in quite some movies and series. He did well as the selfish, tormented, sarcastic but still extremely lovable prick in a wheelchair. During one hour we wanted to give him a hug till his character was kissed by Selena Gomez. We can’t beat that! Yes, our dear Selena… not the greatest actress but we love her anyway.

Our thoughts exactly

This wasn’t the best movie we’ve ever seen but it wasn’t the worst either. The actors were credible, the storyline interesting and most of all we liked the profound message. It might have been the typical “meaning of life” message but in the end it’s the most important and sometimes hard quest for human beings. Most people don’t even think about it until they’re forced to. And that’s what happens in this movie. Three lost souls accidentally meet each other and together they find a way to restore their positive energy. Each of them finds a way to care and help the others, that might sound lame but it’s the essence of a long and happy life… whether you like it or not.
