Shop Local Part 1: 20 of Our Favorite Fashion Belgian Brands and Shops

Businesses around the world are suffering and it’s up to us to support them. Therefore, we’re launching our ‘shop local guide’ in which we gathered some of our favorite brands and places of our homeland, Belgium. First up is the fashion category. Scroll down to have a look at a selection of our favorite local labels and stores.

1. Christian Wijnants

Our loyal readers know we have a soft spot for Christian Wijnants. Right before the lockdown, we attended his show in Paris and even got a tour backstage.

4. YNGR

In 2019, urban planner Jan Pirenne and fashion designer Donovan Tjon launched their sustainable bag collection YNGR. The two of them proved that it’s perfectly feasible to create beautiful bags made from 100% recycled leather. That’s the spirit we need in the future.

5. Louis

For more than 30 years, Louis is an established value when it comes to high-end shopping in Antwerp and Knokke. Their selection of brands we want to buy is endless. We’re guessing that just by mentioning Maison Margiela, Acne Studios, and Balenciaga you’ll know enough.

Journalists Els Keymeulen and Kristin Stoffels joined their impeccable taste in fashion. Together they launched the vintage webshop, Le Freddie, offering hand-picked timeless designs from the past that still look amazing today.

Arte Antwerp is one of Belgium’s finest contemporary collections with a touch, created by Bertony Da Silva. We have to thank him for upgrading the looks of a lot of local male inhabitants.

8. Lies Mertens

Another one of our favorite Belgian bag collections is Lies Mertens. Lies’ designs are all about combining esthetics, functionality, and sustainability. On top of that, every single piece is made by hand and with love in a small Portuguese atelier.

9. Howlin

Howlin and Morrison are two labels founded by the brothers Jan and Patrick Olyslager. Both brands focus on high-quality knitwear, made in Scotland, Ireland, and Belgium. During summer, they also offer a beautiful selection of other tops, sweaters, and shorts.

10. Leselles

Leselles saw the daylight after entrepreneur Liesbet Allaer visited a knitwear factory during one of her trips abroad. She noticed that loads of surpluses of wool were left untouched or thrown away and decided to use those to start her own sustainable scarf label.

11. Smets

Smets is a Luxemburg-based concept store, but since 2012 you can also find them in the center of Brussels. What we like about Smets is the interesting selection of both established and upcoming labels, mixed with a touch of streetwear.

12. Stijl

Stijl is another one of those iconic Belgian boutiques. Sonja Noël opened the shop in 1984 and since then it’s the favorite of everyone who loves our local designers and more. When you’re looking for pieces from Dries Van Noten, Ann Demeulemeester, Y/project, or Tim Van Steenbergen (just to name a few), Stijl is where you need to be.

13. Collectors Club

Collectors Club is a fairly new Belgian brand, established by sisters Nele and Veerle Van Doorslaer. Their aim isn’t to bring the latest trends but to offer a complete wardrobe with a refined style.

14. Avenue and Lockwood

Avenue and Lockwood might be the two most established stores in Antwerp for everyone who’s into sneakers, streetwear, and skatewear. Looking for the latest collab or a pair of exclusive kicks you don’t find at any corner of the street, this is the place-to-be.

15. Labellov

Labellov is where we head to if we’re looking for vintage treasures from luxury brands such as Chanel, Hermès, Prada, and Delvaux (among others). Besides the selection of bags, they have some nice pieces of jewelry, watches, clothes, and shoes too.

16. Façon Jacmin

Denim done well is what defines Façon Jacmin. The label was founded in 2016 by twin sisters Alexandra and Ségolène Jacmin. Alexandra, who designs the collection, worked for Maison Margiela and Jean-Paul Gaultier after she graduated at La Cambre in Brussels. With Façon Jacmin, she created a must-have capsule collection of denim essentials with a twist.

17. Komono

Komono has become a fixed value on a global scale when it comes to watches and sunglasses. In 2009, Raf Maes and Anton Janssens found a gap in the market. There weren’t (m)any brands offering affordable, well-made designs for a good price. Throughout the years they kept on improving on many levels, which turned them into the international brand they are today.

18. Laurence Delvallez

We just recently discovered jewelry designer Laurence Delvallez and fell in love with her collection. She managed to create her own kind of statement jewels that can be edgy or classic at the same time. It all depends on how you would like to wear it.

19. Bernadette

Bernadette is a beautiful project by mother Bernadette and daughter Charlotte de Geyter. As a former buyer for Ralph Lauren (among others), Bernadette is an expert when it comes to fits that work for women of all ages. Charlotte, who graduated from the Academy of Royal Arts in Antwerp, designs all the prints herself by hand. No wonder the collection became an international success.

20. La Collection

La Collection is the creative project of Florence Cools, also known as the woman behind one of Antwerp’s finest boutiques: Damoy. As soon as Damoy opened, she managed to bring a different vibe to the city’s fashion scape. With La Collection she proved that besides running her own shop, she’s also capable of creating a beautiful, timeless collection. This definitely is one of our personal favorites.
