The 10 Best Releases of the Week

We’ve entered the last few months of the year, which usually means that many artists want to release new music to introduce a new album or get ready for a new tour. Every week, we pick the best songs of the week that surprised, moved, or electrified us to guide you through the big amount of releases. So turn up the volume because we discovered some true gems this week that deserve a spot on your Spotify playlist.

1. Trophie — Chemical

On “Chemical” we again get the golden recipe of hyper-pop newcomer Trophie: the softest vocal lines combined with haunting electronic elements. There is always something transcendent, but at the same time, something dark in her music that grabs our attention. “Chemical” is about feeling lonely and steadily builds up to a moment of release in which all the puzzle pieces fall into place. Trophie is a hyper-pop diamond that should not be underestimated and deserves to be discovered now.

2. Mimi Webb — Ghost of You

In her first single’s release since February, we hear Mimi Webb throw her biggest weapon into the fray again, as her voice is once again the star of her newest single “Ghost Of You”. Her unique voice can be recognized out of a thousand and, with the help of a strong team behind her, she seems to be able to score a genuine radio hit with each song without slipping into bland pop. “Ghost Of You” is well-written, cleverly put together, and has a chorus you won’t get out of your head. So you’ve been warned about this one.

3. Paige Bea — 4×4

We are immediately swept away by Paige Bea’s dark “4×4” with its heavy bass and intriguing synths, which increasingly nestle themselves in your mind, not letting go for the entirety of the single. The song bundles the euphoric feelings you feel in the early stages of a relationship but doesn’t opt for using upbeat melodies. In fact, there is more depth thanks to the industrial sounds and her distorted voice.

4. Fauness — “High”

On “High” Fauness explores new heights inspired by music from the late 1970s. Her life as a musician means she is often on the road, giving her the perception that her “home” consists of the things that get into her luggage. It inspired her to write a song about a journey without a goal. Fortunately, her music is not aimless, and she manages to draw us in with her dreamy instrumentation. The guitars and drums provide a gentle dynamic, which is always beautifully expressed in the choruses.

5. BAYLI — act up

BAYLI is the talent they are keeping an eye on in Brooklyn. Her second EP Stories 2 will be released in a fortnight, and with “act up” she has another particularly catchy single that could become a fan favorite. A lovely laidback vibe creates a fun atmosphere while BAYLI sings about unconditional love for your partner. Having already worked with SOPHIE and having toured with SHYGIRL, this is another great move in her career.

6. Tei Shi — Bad Premonition

Before playing her special headlining shows in New York and Los Angeles, Colombian-Canadian singer Tei Shi releases another tasteful single. On “Bad Premonition” she literally and figuratively steps out of her own shadow and accepts that she cannot control everything. “Bad Premonition” is highly recommended for fans of BANKS and Empress Of due to its deliciously sultry sound, which has a nice mysterious edge.

7. Vieze Meisje — Mayonaise

Vieze Meisje’s music is anything but obvious, as she repeatedly creates interesting musical works that can be compared to few things. “Mayonaise” was created in collaboration with her regular producer Azertyklavierwerke with whom she pushes the boundaries of music and further fleshes out the poetronics genre. We never thought a song about mayonnaise would captivate us so much, but Vieze Meisje does it with ease.

8. Dagny — Highs & Lows

In Scandinavia, they know how to make good pop music. Dagny is among the musical frontrunners in Norway, filling the biggest halls there. On her new single “Highs & Lows” she takes things a little easier and opts for a powerful ballad, in which she manages to fully express her feelings. Dagny is a rock-solid pop act that has never disappointed and makes our hearts beat faster this time too.

9. nuum — atypical

Australian producer Nuum is a real discovery for fans of A.G. Cook and Sega Bodega. He can even count himself among his country’s most popular up-and-coming producers. “Atypical” is the best proof of why his talent is being picked up by more and more media outlets, as a motley mishmash of beats fuses into a coherent whole. Things never get boring on “atypical” as small plot twists keep the song exciting until the end.

10. Billie Louise — Fuck You

We conclude our selection this week with homegrown talent. Billie Louise got picked up by Studio Brussels in 2019 but took time off to work on new music. Their return with the dreamy “Fuck You” was long-awaited, leaving us wanting more. A slightly melancholic atmosphere with a summery edge lets us dream away as the beautiful instrumentation creates a stunning backdrop. Welcome back, Billie Louise!
