The 10 Best Releases of the Week

We’ve entered the last few months of the year, which usually means that many artists want to release new music to introduce a new album or get ready for a new tour. Every week, we pick the best songs of the week that surprised, moved, or electrified us to guide you through the extensive amount of releases. So turn up the volume because we discovered some true gems this week that deserve a spot on your Spotify playlist.

1. SEVDALIZA — WOMAN LIFE FREEDOM زن زندگی آزادی

On “Woman Life Freedom” Iranian-Dutch singer SEVDALIZA expresses her support for Iranian women, who are currently in revolt. The death of the 22-year-old Iranian Mahsa Amini, who lost her life because she was not wearing her hijab correctly according to the religious morality police of Iran, caused a lot of international attention. It is not easy to make a song about a difficult topic, but “Woman Life Freedom” is a song that needs to be heard. The focus of the song is on Sevdaliza’s words, which come in very loud right from the start. Minimal production gives her message the space it needs to achieve its effect. With “WOMAN LIFE FREEDOM زن زندگی آزادی” Sevdaliza makes perhaps the most important song of her career.

2. RAYE and 070 Shake — Escapism.

After releasing the strong singles “Black Mascara.” and “Hard Out Here.” RAYE has even more new music for her fans. On “Escapism.” she stays true to the previously outlined line and mixes raps with vocals, making 070 Shake’s contribution a logical addition. This time, too, she pulls off a couple of fierce vocals at the end and lets her voice do the majority of the work, which only made her go up in our estimation. Next year, we can expect her debut album My 21st Century Blues, which will undoubtedly be a peerless pop monument.

3. Sizzy Rocket — BUBBLEGUM

The most striking thing about Sizzy Rocket’s new single “BUBBLEGUM” is undoubtedly the vocal production, which clearly brings her voice to the forefront on the raw guitar lines. The single has a somewhat atypical structure, so the chorus does not feel like a real chorus. It is, therefore, a bit of a search at first to delve into the song, but she still manages to take us along on her wild ride. The guitar solo at the end gives “BUBBLEGUM” another push.

4. joan — don’t wanna be your friend

The first single from joan’s upcoming debut album, “don’t wanna be your friend”, was written by the duo with their friend Jon Capeci (Nightly) after they returned home from a long tour. The song is about growing up, letting go of broken-down loves, and friendships breaking down. Fortunately, their melodies are a little less wistful, and we get a very upbeat, slightly nostalgic chorus that sticks immediately. With “don’t wanna be your friend” they will undoubtedly make more friends than enemies because their pop music is delightfully uncomplicated.

5. Lous and the Yakuza — Hiroshima

Last summer, Brussels-based pride Lous and the Yakuza got to support the likes of Coldplay, Alicia Keys, and Gorillaz, as well as perform at festivals such as Rock Werchter. There, she already performed her new single “Hiroshima”, which even then added some peace to her set. The dreamy song has a very warm production but also harbors a welcoming air of mystery. Next month, we can expect even more new music from Lous, as the follow-up to her debut album will be released by then.

6. Brooke Candy and Only Fire — Yoga

Fans of explicit music will undoubtedly already know the ravishing Brooke Candy, and if not, we’ll introduce them to you today with “Yoga”. On a very club-oriented production by her good friend Only Fire, she once again goes for very naughty metaphors and turns the place upside down. Brooke Candy has made mouths drop many times before, and once again manages to top it off with the raunchy “Yoga”.

7. Ojerime and Mura Masa — Keep It Lo

When we discovered Ojerime in 2020 and premiered her single “Empty“, we knew that this unique underground R&B singer would go far. On her new single “Keep It Lo”, she collaborated with Mura Masa, who gives her the ideal beat to lay down her unique vocal lines. “Keep It Lo” is super smooth, a treat for the ear, and just gives you pure vibes. Ojerime does it again.

8. girl in red — October Passed Me By

Our former cover star girl in red expands on her single “we fell in love in october” with “October Passed Me By” and adds depth to the song with an accompanying music video. For the song, she collaborated with Aaron Dessner of The National, who helped her keep the dreamy sound while evolving it as well. “October Passed Me By” shows how girl in red has blossomed and that she has found true love. The perfect soundtrack for your autumn blues.

9. Vibi — Nights Like This

Nothing or no one can stop you if you really want to go for it. That must be the philosophy of Canadian singer Vibi. After her producer canceled their session last minute, she decided to put a song together herself, and the result is definitely worth it. “Nights Like This” is a very intriguing and layered pop single that works perfectly for a good cry session in bed when the going gets tough. Catchy and groovy, but at the same time nicely melancholic.

10. lozeak — XO

Having a strong vision at a young age is not for everyone. But 19-year-old London whirlwind lozeak knows exactly where she wants to go, taking inspiration from rock and pop. Big names like Oli Sykes and Jack Saunders are already fans, and she can count us among them thanks to her new single “XO”. Her voice immediately grabs our attention and guides us to a very catchy chorus with a strong bass line.
