Unjudged: Amsterdam-Based Rapper Tads Is Always on the Move

Our new ‘Undjudged’ series—by photographer Ines Vansteenkiste-Muylle and her friend Miguel van Doorn—shines a light on a diverse group of Amsterdam-based individuals active in the creative industry. They are known—or may have yet to be discovered—for not following the standard guidelines for life. Ambitious as they are, they do not hesitate to shape the world with their colors by practicing one or more art-related disciplines. Their creative work speaks for itself, but they are also not afraid to share their identity and what keeps them up at night. These creatives took us to their sacred place where they can be themselves in all their glory. In the things they say, the things they make, how they dress, who they are seen with, and how they move. This place is Unjudged.

The Dutch hip-hop scene has been blossoming over these past few years and saw different talents emerge from small stages to big sets. Amsterdam, the hometown of Tads, was most definitely an important source of inspiration for the upcoming rapper. His first single came out six years ago and immediately became a hit in the scene, which helped him gain a loyal fan community.

Finding a home

“I wanted to shoot at my aunt’s place. I was partly raised there and even lived there for a while. It feels like home. It smells like home. Her house is the family home base.” It seems contradictory when talking to Tads about “home”. His narrative is one of a nomad as he lived in many places in Amsterdam. However, always being on the move does not feel like a choice for Tads. It has become a mindset.

“I am everywhere. The only place that does not move is my aunt’s place. She was the most consistent factor in my life. I can count on her,” Tads reveals. “Unjudged is the place where people changed your diapers. Where people wiped your nose. Even in these special outfits: here, I don’t know any shame.”

Tads is a member of the multidisciplinary collective SMIB. At the time of writing, the versatile rapper is finishing his new tape. It might be the embodiment of being “everywhere”. The tape includes straight bars, freestyles, singing, autotune … everything. Be sure to check it out.
