0% petroleum
An overwhelming 99% of the material that is used to make running shoes is plastic, which is made out of petroleum. We don’t need to explain to you why that is kind of very bad for our planet. Veja rightfully thought it was time for them to work on a running shoe that isn’t made out of petroleum. And they did. Four years long, the company worked on techniques to design a good performance sneaker without having to use any petroleum or other plastic materials.
The solution was the use of rice waste, banana oil, sugar cane and wild rubber. By using those products, Veja was able to create the first running shoe that exists out of 53% bio-based and recycled products and 0% petroleum.
